Any win in Beaumont is a good win for the Owls. Lamar always gives us trouble.

Well done guys. Safe trip home.

It wasn't a question of if, it was a question of when...

Eric "stitchhead" Sorenson called us "escape artists" this morning when ranking us #16 in his power rankings.

Ugly, ugly game-- offensively, on the mound and even on defense (with the two errors major contributors to Lamar's two big innings)...BUT another never-say-die, character win. Hard to turn the tide on the road after blowing such a big lead...and to do it against one of their best pitchers. The other WOW, of course, was Kevin McCanna, and the confidence The OG had in him. (I just hope Zech is not hurt or sick, as it is a head scratcher why you don't bring in your closer, who's been pitching exceptionally of late and who was well rested, when you have a one-run lead going to the bottom of the ninth inning.)

Game Ball #1: Michael Aquino (3-5, double, triple, 2 runs scored, 2 RBIs)-- get us going with his 2-run triple in the first, and scored the game-winner after leading off the 9th inning with a double.

Game Ball #2: Kevin McCanna W, 2-0, 2.1 IP, 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 BBs, 0 Ks)-- retired all 7 batters he faced, including putting out the fire in the 7th with two men still in scoring position and the score already tied up. Here's hoping this is his breakout performance.

Game Ball #3: Michael Ratterree (0-1, 3 BBs, sac fly, 2 runs scored, RBI)-- for being one of the table setters early on, and then coming through with the game-winning sac fly against one of Lamar's co-aces.

Offense needs to find a way to get on track. UCF has struggled big time this year when not playing powderpuffs at home (they have a #230+ ranked Strength of Schedule), but their ace and Friday starter (Ben Lively) has the best stats of any starting pitcher in the conference, and one of the very best in the country. Somehow, we're going to have to find a way to score at least 2 - 3 runs in support of AK. Go Owls!

Rice has not lost in Beaumont since 2003. However Lamar has won it's last 3 trips to Reckling. Congrats on the win tonight guys.

Whew, just got home and replayed the game on Gametracker before coming here. Wow. Great character win, Owls. But sure wish we could get a few easy ones along the way. :) 5 hits doesn't win many games (especially when the other team has 11); thanks for being hospitable hosts, Lamar. We'll take it. Rest up, and let's get three this weekend, guys. Great job.

+1

In the context of depth of staff, it's mildly concerning to me that we did not use any pitcher who hadn't appeared in the just complete ECU series. But McCanna gaining some traction would be a hugely positive step.

Reading the box, neither Fox nor McDowell appeared to have good command, but they have previously been reasonably consistent.
