What was his justification? I don't remember the explanation.

I think Jones said that during the week of the game they were practicing directional kickoffs to certain areas of the field. Miliano was hitting those spots and O'Donnell wasn't. So Miliano won the kickoff job that week. That was one of the times when his emphasis on practice performance really cost him during the game.

Seemed like a silly explanation at the time when you have a guy who pounds touchbacks.

Exactly and when the other guy has a nasty history of struggling to even kick it to the 10 yard line.

The Toledo game we lost? Yep, he helped in that one!

Kidding aside, I hate to lose such a good kicker but I have confidence the coaches will have someone ready for the season. I'd rather not be saying "next man in" but it is reality. Good luck to Pat and good for him that he gets to complete his college career close to home. The Bearcats will be fine.

Great call by Butch to take O'Donnell out and let Miliano kick off to Reedy.

Don't remind me 03-banghead Yeah, Munchie was bad that game, but he had us in the lead prior to that kickoff 03-puke

Hopefully UC finds somebody to step up and compete (I haven't seen any of the current candidates btw), but until then I disagree with many here who don't see this as a big concern. It's one thing to go from great punting to merely good punting. But to go to bad punting is something that can haunt a team week after week.

and we are stuck with miliano for 2 more years..he might be the most inconsistent kicker in football. misses easy extra points and 10 yard field goals like its his job

51 of 53 on extra points last year. Has never missed a field goal under 30 yards. 4 of 5 between 30 and 39 last year. Once you get outside of 40 yards, yeah, he has missed a few, but was still 7 of 11 which isn't that awful. Under 40 yards he was 10 of 11 last season. In 2011 he was not very good, but he made a pretty good improvement last year.

For those who saw him at the spring game and are knocking him, you have to realize that John Lloyd was his holder for that game which was new. O'Donnell had been holding for him the previous two seasons. Once those two get on the same page I would expect the consistency to come back.

RE: Pat O'Donnell?
I think he gets knocked on because he doesn't have a huge leg. He has never attempted a kick over 50 yds and probably never will because he just doesn't have the power to get it there at that distance. It is nice to have a guy who can kick field goals that far, but I am OK with a guy like Miliano who is pretty consistent from 40 yards in.

I am a little worried about kickoffs though. O'Donnell was a great guy kicking off because he did well at getting touchbacks. The good thing though is that with the new rules that started last year placing the ball on the 25 is that if you kick shorter, as long as the coverage can keep them from getting past the 30 you are still doing OK. The only time it will really hurt is when you are trying to keep it out of the hands of a great return guy.

RE: Pat O'Donnell?
Interesting note from Paul Dehner's blog:

"He's moving closer to his family in Miami (Fla.) as he transfers to The U and will likely do well down there. The Bearcats have options at punter with CHCA grad John Lloyd next on the depth chart, but Tommy Tuberville will also be bringing some folks in for a tryout. "

Heard tonight that we seem to have a new punter coming aboard from Moeller. Apparently turned down a scholarship to the AF Academy to be a Bearcat.

Good to hear, should immediately make the competition more interesting this fall.

Sam Geraci? He committed to the AFA back in the March. Big kid-- 6'3 210 lbs. He was first-team all-district and special mention all-state as a punter. Would be a solid addition if true.

I accutually am friends with his one of his cousins. Another thing about his family is that their family is a military family so I'm not surprised that he committed to the AFA earlier.

Just thought it was kinda interesting and getting a little play nationally that Pat had more bench press reps (23) than All World DL Javeon Clowney (21) at the Combine.

Not surprised at all. O'Donnell was consistently one of the strongest players at UC when he was here.

Why do they even have the bench press at the combine anymore...
