Personally, I don't want the "State" to be dropped from the name. I always loved it when Chip Kessler called the Bucs' "State" on the broadcasts and the uniforms of the mid-80s said, simply, "STATE!"

I've said this before, but to me, just saying "State" announced to the world that of all the state universities out there, it was East Tennessee State that really mattered.

Screw Ohio! What's wrong with sylvania, Penn? I don't care about Florida and Middle Tennesee or (at one time) Memphis just can't compare!

We are STATE- and everybody knows it!

I used to love watching Jim Valvano's Wolfpack with uniforms that simply said "State." Pete Franklin once said that in a conference with highbrow schools like Duke, North Carolina, and Virginia; North Carolina State was destined to be the "Billy Carter of the ACC."

Ouch.

But when they just put "State" on that red uniform, and they won the National Championship, it seemed like N.C. State was the only State that mattered.

And frankly, in the year of the Cardiac Pack, they were.

I'd like to see the Bucs have that kind of status one day.

So keep State. And celebrate it!

Old timers in North Carolina thought that the only legitimate college rivalry in the USA was the one between State and Carolina.

Just something I noticed a few years ago when I was on the campus of "Louisiana" to teach for a couple of days.

They showed me the new signs. "University of Louisiana" had replaced "Louisiana-Lafayette."

I was told the university unilaterally decided to do this without any approval from the state. Louisiana-Monroe wasn't thrilled ... I guess they should have put their own signs up.

Just a thought at how one university decided to raise its profile by changing it's name ... even if they did have to take heat for it. I'm not suggesting ETSU change it's name. Just that it's time to show some backbone and take this university to the next level. I'm liking what I'm seeing so far from the new administration. But I have to wonder why Bartow is still around.

All of ULLs letter heads and offical things still reads ULL or Louisiana-Lafayette. The only thing they are trying to do is brand their sports teams as Louisiana. The samething UNCC has done by branding themselves as Charlotte.

LSU people could care less, LSU is a brand in its ownself, its everyone else that has had a conniption fit over it.

LOL. Good one.

"Bringing loving care to visiting 3-pt. shooters."

(Instead of their laughable "bringing loving care to healthcare", for those outside the region who don't know their schmaltzy slogan.)

Yet another one of those things were I (more or less) agree with Pitt. First of all, "University of East Tennessee" sounds *incredibly* pretentious.

Beyond that, all us old-timers, and the generation before me, have referred to "the college" as "State". It's just in the air and water. That being said, referring to the UNC/NC St. divisionary situation as *the* choice, is, of course, very regionally-defining and limiting. Tell the Cowboys that NC St. is "State". Same thing in Oregon, Michigan, Arizona, Mississippi, and more places. But we're not after the AZ St. Wildcat fans, mostly. So, I'm definitely on the side of keeping the "State" aspect. It's who we are. (And except in certain circles, I'll still always call Memphis State just that.)

Now..........as to "Louisiana".........
I'd heard that maybe once, and didn't know who that referred to - until now. HOW DARE the Ragin' Cajuns change their name (again)!!! Going from "Southwestern Louisiana" to "Louisiana - Layfayette" was one thing. With the "Layfayette" there, one still knows where they are, and what their heritage is. Something to be proud of. Sort of like App. St. and "Mountaineers", and their hillbilly as a mascot. Embrace your heritage (unless you're from NJ, or somewhere similar, but *I* digress).
"Louisiana" is even more pretentious (and silly) than "University of East Tennessee". I have a hard time believing they're doing that. That's just wrong.

I'm not opposed, for our uniforms, to any of "State", "ETSU", or "East Tennessee". Probably of the 3, I'd pick the last one there in a close call.

Personal preference if you're talking uniforms is "ETSU" across the chest in big letters. If you want to incorporate "East Tennessee State," run it in the middle stripe down the pants legs on either side.

Funny, how we switched to a name discussion. I do remember when there was talk of changing the name to University of East Tennessee.

My original point was, for what it's worth, that Louisiana (or Louisiana-Lafayette) to some initiative to do something and, without asking anybody's permission, did it.

I'm not even sure where I was going it that. I just liked that they wanted to get past that "Other directional school in Louisiana" attitude. Let's face it: We all lumped Monroe and Lafayette together as the two worst football teams in Division 1. I'm guessing it probably sounded way better to recruits than ULL.

And now the Rajin Cajuns have been to two straight bowls and brought 40K fans to the Superdome.

Yep. Agree 100%. ETSU is local, in my opinion. "East Tennessee" says who we are and where we are from.

Of all the dumb decisions by the previous regime...adopting ETSU was not one of them. Makes total sense. No East Tennessee. Makes you want to finish the the thought...East Tennessee what? It's a tad early but if Noland keeps the school moving in the right direction...Noland University sounds good to me! We could adopt the name of one of the main academic buildings and be Warf Pickle University! ETSU could just join with the medical school and be Quillen. How 'bout Roan Mountain College to identify with the 2nd highest point 6000 feet in the Eastern USA. Could name it after Sammy's Apex. Rhododendron school would be a nice way to honor the plant that is abundant in the region. I wouldn't mind naming it Bradshaw Butt to honor the Nutrisystem spokesman who spent a day on his butt thanks to the Bucs. I really think ETSU ought to bring that guy in to speak on campus. He won't talk about that game...but maybe if ETSU paid him...he might give a few words.

Absolutely.

I lived in North Carolina in perhaps the glory era of sports there. UNC and Clemson (who have a following in Western NC) were the defending national champs in basketball and football and NCSU followed the next year by winning the national championship in hoops.

I'm convinced UNC-Duke is an ESPN manufactured rivalry. Yes, okay, they are eight miles apart and traditionally they end their football seasons against each other, but Duke was always this private school with players from all over and no real home team feel outside of Durham. There's a reason why Cameron Indoor doesn't seat 10,000.

But when I lived there it was always UNC-NCSU. All the white collar people rooted for UNC and all the blue collar people rooted for State. They were the state schools.

I'm sure it didn't hurt that they were winning national championships after each other while Duke was trying to establish themselves with a coach with a name that could not be spelled properly and had a losing record. In fact, Duke didn't just lose that year- they lost bad.

But ultimately, in North Carolina, it was always UNC-NCSU. Always.

The thing I missed most during my two year absence from this board. Pitt and Doc's on-the-mark discussions about hoops history.

Thanks, Pitt.

You're welcome!

It does provide a bit more depth than kneejerk Murry Bartow criticisms, doesn't it?

Exactly. Duke? I was at Cameron that night in '67 or '68 when ETSU bet em.
