Wayne Scott is a sophomore offensive lineman at Kent State, but before he left Mainland, he delivered a message that a current Buccaneers offensive tackle seems to have taken to heart.

“He just told me to keep working hard,” rising junior Marcus Tatum said. “He told me it would pay off.”

And the 6-foot-6, 255-pound Tatum said he is beginning to see Scott's words come to fruition after picking up his first offer, from Cincinnati, last week.

“It just feels good to follow in those footsteps,” Tatum said.

Tatum also called the offer “exciting.”

“It feels like 500 pounds off your shoulders,” he said. “And it's just extra motivation to keep doing what the coaches tell you to do.”

Miami Gulliver Prep Class of 2016 defensive back Brandon Shuman says he has five scholarship offers and “Cincinnati is showing me the most love.”

Shuman participated in the Rivals250 Underclassmen Challenge in Jacksonville this past weekend. The 5-foot-11, 177-pound corner said Cincinnati, FIU, South Alabama, Alcorn State and Western Michigan had offered to this point.

“I have major interest from Oklahoma, Pitt, Wisconsin and Clemson,” Shuman said. “I was suppose to go on a couple college visits but my coach just got a job at UM. I may go to Cincinnati, Wisconsin and FIU [on unofficial visits].”

Shuman said he plans to wait until his senior year to commit and said his education will be a major factor. He would like to major in engineering.

BOCA RATON — Hialeah Champagnat Catholic 2016 athlete Jotavius Barrett has a new leader, he said Monday at the FAU camp.

“Temple was my leader but when Cincinnati offered I was going to commit,” Barrett said. “But my coach [Mike Tunsil] told me just to hold on a little longer.

“I’ll just be patient. There’s more offers to come.”

The 5-foot-8 Barrett is a versatile playmaker who could play on either side of the ball on the next level. For instance, Temple has offered him as a defensive back, while Cincinnati has offered as a slot receiver.

Barrett has seven total offers, including Florida Atlantic and FIU.

Barrett helped the Florida Fire to the IMG 7v7 national championship this summer. He said he recently was invited to play in the Under Armour All-America Game.

Would be a nice solid pickup. It sounds like he really likes WVU but I don't think they've offered. Hopefully he picks UC tonight.
