Remember though that OT means just that - a lot of longer hours, weekends and holidays. They ain't just working 9-5, M-F.
(Please don't talk about how salaried people work long hours. I know they do. It doesn't take away from the fact that the garbage men and women are working long, ****** hours to make 100k a year.)
OT - They recently had flamebait articles here in the Cities about a Metro Transit bus driver making some huge amount of money per year - I think it was around $100k. Of course, tax payers flew out of the woodwork demanding to know why a lowly bus driver made that much money, how dare they pay a bus driver that much money, what a waste he should only make $30,000 per year etc.
Then, as the story was flushed out, it seems that this employee was at the top of his salary grade because he had been a driver since 1980, and he was one of the only bus drivers to work weekends, nights and holidays, and he had an exemplary driving record to which he collected annual bonus. He didn't call in sick, and indeed he was (because of his seniority) the first person offered extra shifts when someone was out. And he took them, without fail. He took every advantage he could of his work ethic, his contract and his employer to make a good living - but he was working 70 hours a week, weekend, holidays and nights included.
Sounds to me like exactly the type of employee we need in a City - responsible, hard working and safe. As a tax payer, that is worth a high salary.
Perhaps, indeed certainly this is not the case with all Public employees. But rarely is the salary amount in itself a reason to get excised.
