Anyone here buy silver?
I sold a bunch of silver last year when it was up around $40. Some of it I had bought at $3 back in the 80's. It down around 27 now and I started buying it again. I pay spot plus $2 at Scott's on Westnedge.
Anyone ever buy offline? What quantities do they require? What kind of fee do they charge over spot price?

RE: Silver
Ironically, I'm posting from a hotel room in the Silversmith Hotel on Jewelers Row, Wabash Street, Chicago.
The Silversmith has an awesome historical display of silver serving pieces.
I don't have any silver bullion but we do own a big bag of pre 1965 dimes and several dozen silver dollars.

Good point, Whinny.
Especially since I don't even lock my doors haha.
Couple sheriffs and a couple state boys in the neighborhood, though. Not to mention the Iraq war sniper. And a very mean Jack Russell that doesn't like strangers. He gets on your ankle and won't let go.

RE: Silver
APMEX online.
American Precious Metal Exchange.
Selling 100 oz. Canadian silver bars currently at $2737 plus $1.79 per oz. fee.
They post buy - sell spot price and honor the order price at your call, as long as your good funds are in hand within 5 days.
The Canadian government bars are .9999 pure, most bars only say .999 so a very slight bonus there as well.
Those bar "stackers" are kind of cool, especially the old ones, or ones from India or somewhere exotic. They charge extra for collector bars, old and rare stuff is a premium over spot, like coin collecting I guess.
They sell ounces poured in a Ten Commandments mold. Neat. You can get all kinds of stuff for birthdays, graduation, etc.
My dad always gave silver dollars for stocking stuffers, birthdays, etc. He liked old hard money a lot.
I went to the Titanic exhibit in GR this weekend with my grandsons. They had a display of paper money all in "Silver Certificates", "This bill can be exchanged for 10 dollars in silver at a Federal Reserve Bank." Those were the days.

RE: Silver
When my father in law was dying a few years ago, he told me when he was gone to take his tools and other stuff in his workshop.
He was a die maker at GM and had a nice machinist tool collection. In the misc. stuff was several pounds of 70/30 silver solder. He used that to braze die cutting rule for die cutting upholstery material. I just realized that silver solder is 70% silver 30% tin. There is at least 5-6 pounds of that down my shop. 6 lbs. x 16 oz = 96 oz. x .7 = 67 oz of silver.
Thanks, Ray!
