It' called being a Houston sports team (both the city and university). When it's all on the line, Houston teams fold, except for the time when the sports Gods were in our corner during Clutch City.

I still can't watch the end of the NC St game. The image of Valvano running around and Akeem pounding on the floor in frustration is burned into my brain.

That Louisville game was a wonder though. Bennie friggin' Anders!

And yeah, I was a Coog then. Twentysomething years with UAB changes things, but I still have my loyalties and memories, and Phi Slama Jama and the Pardee Coogs were hella fun to watch.

BTW, RIP Jack Pardee.

That wasn't Akeem pounding the floor. He saw Charles' alley oops (yes, with the -s) slam, walked up to the 3-point line and collapsed as Valvano ran around his right side to find someone to hug. I don't know who that was pounding his fist.

Watch the clip again. The NCAA's are still running, sure as hell it will be inflicted on me yet again before the Final Four is over. I could be wrong, but I don't think so.

one of the greatest college games i've ever watched.

i was pulling for the 'ville and quickly pulled for the cougars in the championship to no avail. those were the 2 best teams that year.

i'm used to pulling for the underdog but i did not want nc state to win it.

i felt the louieville/houston game shoulda been the championship that year.

thanks for the video.

I lived in Houston for six years growing up. Moved away in 82. I was watching the new ESPN 30 for 30 on Valvano and NC State over the weekend and turned it off before end. Still hurts every time I see it.
Louisville game was fun to watch. Houston had 14 dunks.

No way possible. It was a player from the bench who had a warm up jacket on.

Akeem collapsed near the 3-point line not far from Valvano looking for someone to hug at :10 of this video:

Fast forward to :19 seconds and you see a player with a warm up jacket slapping the hardwood, Larry Micheaux.

Correction, I think it was Michael Young. One way or another, it obviously wasn't Akeem.
