Beginnings for the UAB Blazers
Beginnings for the UAB Blazers was in the Sun Belt Conference that included UNC Charlotte, Jacksonville, Old Dominion, South Alabama, South Florida, Virginia Commonwealth, and Western Kentucky. To soon be in a conference that includes three institutions from those members, and arguably the three most important save South Alabama, is kind of neat; at least i find it so. I know Coach Bartow was always enamored with being in a conference with Memphis. But many of us became Blazer fans with games versus the 49ers, Monarchs, and Hilltoppers called by Gary Sanders. Here is hoping Conference USA finds a way to put UAB in a division with those three and Southern Miss.

RE: Beginnings for the UAB Blazers
It wasn't so much Memphis that Bartow was enamored with. He got us into the Great Midwest because schools such as Memphis, Marquette, Cincinnati and St. Louis valued basketball and was well attended. Not true with the Sun Belt in the early 90s. CUSA evolved after that and after the first defections of Louisville and Cincinnati, etc, the conference was worse than the Sun Belt ever was.

With these teams coming in, I think basketball will show some improvement.

Trying to recall where Coach Bartow's call-in show was before The River Market & Deli. Rossi's? Remember a prime sponsor: "The Rime Companies...for your total way of living." ha. Gary Sanders would be trying to keep Coach Bartow on task talking about the past or upcoming game and in would walk someone, "oh there is Mavis" (or someone) and Coach Bartow would be off doing his greeting on the air. He was truly one of a kind. UAB people have their reasons to miss him. The Classic Coach of UAB.

I'm guessing this thread is basketball-only? Basketball scheduling hasn't been determined yet. Most likely we wil play 10 teams once and 3 teams twice per season. I don't know how those 3 will be determined, or if they will change from year to year. The conference said it is looking at other "unique" scheduling options as well, whatever that may be.

I think it was at The Mill (5 points) before that.

As long as scheduling focuses on maximizing RPI then I do not care.

I would love to see a scheduling agreement with the MWC, A10, or Big East (C7 addition)
