WHOAAAA to even suggest U of I is at the same level as NIU football is just plain ignorant. Illinois is a top 60 program, NIU is a top 20-30, HUGE difference.

For most it doesn't matter until NIU defeats UofI.

Until then we will be the little brother program.

Same thing goes for NU.

UI will be lucky to draw 20k fans to that game at Soldier Field. They won't be able to give tickets away to that one.

We will see. I personally hope that its a bad draw as its the only way that NIU will play UofI at SF in 2015.

Im sorry HJ, but I have to call BS on this. More like the little brother who grew up a foot taller than the older brother. I would be willing to guess that nearly every NIU vs Illinois/NU game has been played @ Illinois and NIU. Someone needs to verify that though. Series doesnt start until a game is played in Huskie Stadium. I know we all get a little extra hop in our step when Illinois is doing good because we grew up watching and cheering for them, but to wish really hard doesnt make it so. NIU is by far a superior football program to both NU/Illinois. NU and Illinois are top 60-70 programs, NIU is a top 20-30, I know its only 50 slots, but those 50 spots are a huge difference IMO.

That could possibly be true but until we defeat them it doesn't matter. Other than the extreme NIU diehards that will still be peoples mindset.

As far as this argument goes right now, BigTen teams respect NIU in football, they don't respect that team from Champaign. They think they will have a game against us and an automatic W against them. Program wise, NU is still ahead of us.

Individual teams at NIU may be better, but not the whole program. Its not even close. Just the Bigten Network alone elevates those programs over NIU. It doesn't mean NIU isn't a great mid-major program, but its still mid-major. From the bands to the budgets, U of I is light years ahead of NIU. When we play at SF, we are counting on there fans to make it a success. There is a difference between a program and a year to year team. This isn't even a debate! We have had our last two coaches leave for Minnesota and NC State. And we all know it was in their best interest because they were going to better overall programs and moving up.

Well in the past decade NIU not just > Illinois but >>. Yeah I realize NIU lost in Champaign, but that was a unique set of circumstances where Harnish was getting his feel back, and it was a road game. From 2003-2012 NIU >> Illinois and NIU

I see your point, to the casual fan or Herbstreit who dont know anything about college football I can see the argument Illinois is a better program but anyone who follows college football without bias knows the two programs cannot even be compared right now.

Also you are talking about football program where as 222 is talking about athletic program.

Well thats a good point, Illinois is obviously a better basketball program and Im sure they are better at softball/golf, but football, absolutely no comparison right now.

We are the better program right now and it's not close. The point though is that we don't NEED to play Illinois. They're so bad (and will probably stay that way with Timid Beckman as HC) that there's no benefit to us playing them in Champaign. They will never come to DeKalb.

Forget Illinois, move on!

While what you have said is absolutely true, one of my DREAMS is to see NIU beat the Illness. Before I die...I want to see that happen. and not just win against the Illness...but do an utter BEAT DOWN on them. *sigh* 03-cloud9
