Maybe KSU will stay in the ASUN but play football in the Big South. Although with VMI leaving, this does open a spot for an all sports member. After they fill that position, the Big South really doesn't have any room for all-sports members. Probably will take football only schools.

Stetson and Jacksonville have to be wondering what they're doing in the league full of public schools with little history in D-1 at this point. Anyone think they're working the phones with the SoCon about non-football memberships to replace Davidson and CofC?

AD Altier ain't workin anything but his johnson!

Seriously, SU will be in the ASUN forever or until it folds, which won't happen. It's not in Altier's blood to think proactively, with a visionistic flair.

And finally, SU will stay non-scholarship in FB for the foreseeable future (10 years at least).

That is all.

RE: Future of the A-Sun?
If any of these schools are looking to move to Division 1, I think any would be fine choices for consideration by the A-Sun (in alpha order). I think with Kennesaw State and Northern Kentucky remaining as flight risks, that they A-Sun would be wise to add at least four.:

Alabama-Huntsville
Armstrong Atlantic State
Augusta State
Columbus State
Clayton State
South Carolina-Aiken
Tampa

The following all have football so that is another obstacle. But perhaps an alliance could be reached with the Big South to accept them as football only members? ...
North Alabama
Valdosta State
West Georgia

Add Lipscomb to that list.

I'd like to see West Georgia and Valdosta State join the ASun. Maybe play football in Big South if ASun doesn't try to sponsor it.

I see where KSU is looking to stay in the ASun and become an affiliate member of a yet unknown conference for the football.

Seems like the DII teams are being cautious about the ASun's future. Under current NCAA rules, if the ASun loses one more DI team, the ASun may no longer exist. (A DI conference needs 7 full members. NKU isn't a full member for three years, so the ASun is at the edge of a cliff right now). Rumors are that the NCAA might extend a grace period for a conference like the ASun by possibly viewing a DII member transitioning as being acceptable to count toward 7 members.

Also, appears UNA has lost some of the funding that they wanted to go to DI. But when they do, would agree that the Big South would want their football. Doubt the OVC has an interest, unless it loses a team.

http://www.florala.net/sports/article_0b...f6878.html

UA-Huntsville is not going to DI in all sports. Their DI hockey team was accepted into the WCHA (which includes teams in Alaska, Minnesota, Michigan, and Ohio), so their expenditures for that sport will go up significantly. Hockey at the DI level is their priority.

RE: Future of the A-Sun?
Thanks ... that's good stuff. Well, it would look like now that the A-Sun would look more favorably on UNA due to the numbers game. I don't know about the last two decades, but I do recall that UNA won the Div II men's hoops national title in 1990 or so. So the hoops might be able to help in strength instead of just numbers.

I think a Columbus State fan/alum posted a few article that certainly indicates a desire to move to Division I. In viewing their profile, appears to be nice potential addition.

As for the other two I mentioned, just throwing names out. I think I did read about Lincoln Memorial in Tennessee as one to consider. I suppose that Lipscomb would be in favor.

Regardless, I think time is of the essence for the A-Sun and hope they make the moves needed much sooner than later.

RE: Future of the A-Sun?
FGCU is the school that really needs a travel partner: Nova Southeastern would be a good fit just across the Everglades.

Heard some rumblings about Florida Tech. Tampa was in DI years ago: maybe they could return.

Bellarmine (in Louisville) is DI in lacrosse only, but eventually wants to be DI in all sports. They are petitioning to join the ASun in that sport and would be a good fit with Lipscomb and NKU.

Air Force has also contacted the ASun about men's lacrosse membership (ECAC is falling apart), so that would be a coup for the ASun.

In the North, the ASun could look to add S Indiana, Lincoln Memorial, Lindenwood (in a few years) and maybe IUPUI, IPFW, and W Ill if the Summit implodes.

Georgia has all kinds of prospects besides Columbus St: W Georgia, Clayton St, may N Georgia and Georgia Regents after they both get things straightened out after their regional mergers. Valdosta St has repeatedly stated it won't move up.

ASun invites Bellarmine for lacrosse

"Bellarmine becomes the seventh men's lacrosse program for the A-Sun, as the Knights will compete with Furman, High Point, Jacksonville, Mercer, Richmond and VMI for the 2014-15 A-Sun Men's Lacrosse Championship."

So Mercer Lacrosse will still be in A-Sun in 14-15 ?

The Southern Conference would have to declare it will sponsor lacrosse and then poach all the teams. Right now, only Jacksonville is a full member of the ASun, so Southern taking it over might be possible.

With Stetson, Kennesaw, and Jacksonville sponsoring women's lacrosse, the women's side is much more secure.

Future of the A-Sun?
It looks like the ECAC will play one last time for Spring 2014:

Ohio State
Michigan
Bellarmine
Air Force

I guess everyone could play each other twice in 2014. The CAA should have some holes in its schedule after St. Joseph's left for the NEC, so a double round-robin may not be necessary.

Georgia Regents to DI ? (merged University of Augusta State and Georgia Health Sciences)

http://www.asubellringer.com/division-i-...niversity/

Quote:As a result of its merger with Georgia Health Sciences, the Augusta State athletic programs could be poised to move up a notch. Clint Bryant, the athletic director for Augusta State, said the university’s sports programs could soon make the transition to Division I. Currently, only the men’s and women’s golf teams compete at the NCAA’s highest level of competition. For the other athletic programs at Augusta State, a move up would be a return to the old days, Bryant said.
“Augusta College, later known as Augusta State, was a part of Division I for six years from 1985 to 1991,” Bryant said. “In 1991, due to the formulation of the Peach Belt Conference, we dropped down to Division II in all sports except golf.”

Columbus St to DI?

Have all three Georgia schools turned down DI, or are they waiting on further clarification from the NCAA on how if they would count as full DI if the ASun loses more members?

Not unless they add football, which doesn't seem to be coming anytime soon.
