Davidson to A-10. That leaves 4 open spots in SoCon

Time for the A-Sun to man their battle stations !!! I would think that If Davidson leaves for the A-10, then the SoCon probably takes all three of ETSU, Mercer & KSU, and a few more from another conference. A possible merge with the Big South was crazy talk a while back, but now, they may have to do something like that just to survive. I hope the A-Sun is not so focused on the "Football" issue that they are not developing a serious short term and more importantly, a long term plan for expansion.

According to JU FB coach Kerwin Bell on Jax talk radio yesterday, the stadium build-out is nearing fruition and scholarship football is down the near road. We will see.

JU to move to scholarship football? Very interesting. Do you have a podcast link of that interview.

At the very least, JU should be able to land a football-only invitation from The Big South if so.

RE: Future of the A-Sun?
If Jacksonville can show that they will go scholarship football, ETSU may find themselves in hot water or the inside looking in.

One thing I have to ask people to consider about Gulf Coast is that though they may be very far south, it doesn't cost that much to fly to Ft. Myers (certainly not as much as it does to Johnson City). Now, this isn't the NBA. Flying to games might not be that practical.

But what I see in Ft. Myers is a program that's really done nothing but win and improve since they went D-I. They are in a growing market which will need a team of their own for identification purposes and the Miracle and Everblades will never do on a national scale what the Eagles did this year. Didn't somebody just offer FGCU a ton of money just in case they ever wanted to start up football?

I have to ask if I'm the SoCon what kind of conference I want to have, and private and academically orientated would seem to fit their make up now. ETSU could make it, but they don't offer the market of many of their competetors for a SoCon bid, aren't private like Mercer, won't have The Citadel begging for their return like the Bulldogs will VMI, etc.

The thing about ETSU is that they are proactive, which is good. But I'm inclined to believe the OVC will stay at 12. The SoCon did vote unanimously to approve them, but I unanimously approved going out with this woman wearing high heels who just walked into Starbucks until Kate Upton came in and sat on my lap.

In theory.

I don't see Belmont staying in the OVC much longer; they are just not a fit. If the A-10 is willing to come as far south as Davidson, Belmont would not be a stretch. Belmont recruits mainly out of the northeast, anyway, so it would work well for them. ETSU would be perfect for the OVC because it would put most of the TN schools under one umbrella.

RE: Future of the A-Sun?
Possibly, but one thing about ETSU is that they'd be one of only two schools in the Eastern Time Zone.

Another thing- Morehead State's president was a very big player in ETSU dropping football and going the direction they did athletically the last 10 years. Now, the new regime has come in and essentially reversed everything he proposed.

That does not make a good neighbor. Whatever power MSU has, I have to think they'd vote to keep ETSU out.

Did some minute research and I would be in agreement that Columbus State is probably the best "call up" choice for the A-Sun. Looking at the Peach Belt, I would also consider Clayton State if Kennesaw moves on as well. Augusta State fits well. The sooner the better for adds, it would appear.

A-Sun is gonna in a tough spot if they are in a "waiting" mode right now. There will be little time to act, and they'll have to claw for scraps to fill the conference. They don't have much choice in the matter though.

Future of the A-Sun?
If the Horizon League and WAC team up to destroy the Summit League, there might be some options available for the A-Sun. If both IPFW and IUPUI get left behind, the conference can build an Ohio Valley quad with Lipscomb and NKU.

The Ohio River region also has other DII's that want to move up: Bellarmine, Lincoln Memorial, S Indiana, and later Lindenwood. With cheap flights to Florida compared to the Dakotas, been warning the other Dakota school fans that the Summit has very few options, but they really don't want to listen.

At best the Summit and A Sun merge, but the ASun can likely take who they want from the the eastern Summit, including W Illinois. There are now some rather credible reports today that Oakland is going to the Horizon, so the dismantling of the Summit has already begun.

Oakland has most of the tournament credits for the Summit League. It would be in the best interest of the Horizon League to hasten the Summit's demise and have the credits revert to the schools. Taking IUPUI would account for all of the credits except the one earned by South Dakota State this year.

IUPUI hasn't been to the tournament since 2003. It's actually Oakland that would benefit most, as it would gain its 2010 and 2011 units for a few years (for itself), while SDSU (2012 and 13), NDSU (2009), and Oral Roberts (2008) would also gain credits. But for NDSU and SDSU, those units won't pay the increased cost of independence.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Summit_League

With FGCU's extra units, and if NKU and Lipscomb stay, that should be enough for the ASun to attract IUPUI, IPFW, and W Ill, as the ASun would have higher payouts than the Summit (which hasn't had a round of 64 tourney win since Valpo in 1998 - although Oakland won a last eight game in 2005).

What does the ASUN do? Who do they invite for 2014?

It would seem like they might have to look at DII schools again. They should have been ready for this for months, I would hope they had a plan for every scenario.

ASun needs to talk to Florida Tech, they have a plan to move to D1 at some point! and they fit the foot print pretty well.

RE: Future of the A-Sun?
I think whoever gets to act 1st out of WAC, Summit, A-Sun will be fine, 1 could disappear. What I mean by gets to, is that teams that want to join the Summit or A-Sun won't until they know the SoCon, CAA, Big South, Horizon are done taking from you and the ones just above you. However you could get D-II schools now. WAC can't do anything unless the Summit gets hit by say the Horizon for another 2 teams, then they could come in and take NDSU, SDSU, USD(if the Big Sky doesn't, they're talking), UNO, WIU. A-Sun takes IPFW, IUPUI. If the Horizon stops at 10 and just takes NKU then the Summit could go for Chicago St., and try get UTPA maybe even UMKC, by offering them the same deal the WAC gave them(host 3 conf. tourneys)

For the A-Sun. Mercer, ETSU are gone, KSU will either fill the 12th spot in the SoCon or the Big South. NKU may be the top target for the Horizon. Lets say that KSU goes to the SoCon for 12. CAA is looking at Elon, UNCG, Albany to get to 12. SoCon is said to also be looking at UNCA and High Point if UNCG leaves. USC-Upstate tops the Big South list if KSU is in the SoCon. They'll need a fb school so they may stretch west to get UWG, and UNA. So you might be down 5 schools. 4 is highly likely. Georgia Regents, Columbus St., Lincoln Memorial, Nova Southeastern should be on speed dial. If UNA and UWG make it to D-I. W.Florida and Valdosta would probably want to follow. You could land them and they'd take fb only in the Big South. Maybe the NCAA allows you a full 4 year waiver after all the good exposure FGCU gave us all. If not you have 2 years of a waiver then 2 lost years of AQ, then get it back. If you bring in 2 D-II school in 2013 and hold on to say 2 of the 4 that are leaving through 2013 then there'd only be 1 lost year of AQ.
