Mars Bars incident UAB & WKU. The Old Farts Like Myself Remember This
With the possibility of WKU joining C-USA, this will renew a rivalry that goes back to the old Sun Belt days with Gene Barton and Clem Haskins . But one of the most memorable games is the "Mars Bar Incident" of 1986 when the Hilltoppers defeated the 18th-ranked Blazers. If memory serves me correctly, the Hilltopper's center and Alabama native Clarence Martin was called for a 5th foul on rebound and a put back dunk. The fans became upset with the call and started to throw Mar's bars, that were given to them (I beleive) as some type of promotional give away...... Welcome WKU

I was at that game. The old Sun Belt was wild that year. A week later UAB played at Old Dominion and fights broke out during an intense game. Coach Bartow threatened to pull the team off the floor and something was also thrown at the team in that game. I believe the ODU coach was Tom Young, and he refused to make an announcement to settle the crowd down because he was angry at the refs about a call. Some of the UAB players went into the stands after some fans and and John Prince, a UAB assistant coach was almost arrested. It as a wild scene, and would have probably resulted in several suspensions on both teams in today's environment. But that wasn't how it handled in the 1980's

That's funny...today that foul has no chance of being called (not saying it was one) and is ESPN's #! play of the day. I can hear the Dickster now...OOOOHHHH that is prime time baby! You can't stand on the street corner and get money like that.

The Mars bars were given out as you entered the game. I couldn't believe there were that many left to throw. I ate mine almost immediately. Are there that many diabetics in Bowling Green?

Clarence Martin (who was from a small town just south of Birmingham) almost started a riot down here (not sure if it was the same season). He clotheslined Steve Mitchell, who hit the floor and didn't move, and stood over him. The students surged down to the edge of the court with one Birmingham cop standing in front of them with his hands raised, shouting "please, please don't do this." The ref ejected Martin, who walked straight off the court. One gesture and total chaos would have broken out. My brother was the "McDonald's Junior Blazer" for the game, a kid they had sit on the bench, and when Mitchell hit the floor the bench erupted and the last player, a hulking 6-7 guard named Bruce Baker, jumped up, shouted at Martin that he was coming to kick his ass, and then turned to my brother and said, "when we run onto the court to fight those ********, you run the other way."
