College basketball tournament idea
I doubt this would ever happen, but I think it would be an interesting idea for all 347 teams.

As soon as the regular season is over, have the selection committee pick the top 32 teams in the nation. Those 32 teams would be exempt from having to participate in their conference tournaments and they would receive an automatic bid to the field of 64. The other 315 teams that didn't get selected would all be required to participate in their conference tournaments. The winners of the 32 conference tournaments would advance to the field of 64.
Have the NCAA bracket announced at the same time that all of the conference tournament brackets are announced. So the #1 seed Indiana would await to see who becomes the #16 seed, which would be whoever wins the Missouri Valley conference tournament. The #2 seed Miami would await to see who becomes the #15 seed, which would be whoever wins the Sun Belt conference tournament.
So the top 32 teams in the nation would be seeded 1 through 8. Those top 8 seeds would all be watching specific conference tournaments to see which team will advance to play them. The teams seeded 8 through 16 would eventually be given to the 32 teams who win the 32 conference tournaments.

Here are the advantages of this idea:

1. There would be no need for the NIT, CBI, or CIT tournaments. The conference tournaments would basically become the early rounds of the NCAA tournament. So technically all 347 teams are included in March Madness.

2. The conference tournament games would be more exciting because every game would be life or death for all of the teams. If you win then you advance. If you lose then your season is over.

3. Every year you have a few teams complaining that they didn't get selected to the tournament. This scenario would put an end to all of that. All 347 teams would be given a clear path to the national championship. If you lose then you have nobody to blame but yourself. You can't blame the selection committee for making a bad choice.

If it's not broke, don't fix it. And, jugding by the ratings this weekend, it's not broken at all...

The only extra advantage I'd really see in your system is that you'd get a few different fan bases cueing in on random minor conferences' games. Miami fans would actually watch the MVC champ game. But that's not a real significant bump in my opinion.

To play devil's advocate, the 33rd team (according to the selection committee) might have to play the 35th and 39th and 44th ranked teams (if they all reside in the same conference...which they might! (Big Ten, ACC, Big East))....just to get into the tournament. Meanwhile, the MVC "champ" has to battle through the 330th, 342nd, and 345th best team for their spot. There still would be inherent unfairness in the system.

I think the system works great.

The only thing I see happening is maybe 4 more NCAA teams so the Dayton games would be 4 each day Noon/2pm and 7/9pm.

The conferences won't agree to take their best teams out of the conference tournament. Never.

This year, for example, there were six Big Ten teams with seedings of 8 or better in the NCAA bracket -- so among the top 32 in the country -- if you take those six teams out of the B1G tournament and just have the bottom six teams play in Chicago, a lot of people who bought tickets are going to demand their money back, or more likely the fans of teams good enough to get an "exemption" will never buy tickets to the conference tournament at all, and the building will be nearly empty for that tournament if none of the fans of Indiana, Michigan State, Michigan, Ohio State, and Wisconsin buy tickets.

Better idea: Give the autobids to the regular-season champs of each conference. Let the conferences play conference tournaments if they want to, and teams might be able to improve their case for an at-large bid by doing well in their conference tournament, but reserve the autobids for the teams that earned it by winning the regular-season titles.

I agree with this. Sooner or later the Great West will get an automatic bid and better to add three at larges instead of losing one.

Uh, actually Great west is dead and won't have a chance(not sure where NJIT is going yet). But, the point remains about the BE/Aresco split.

Oh and your idea would add 8 teams to the mix-not 4. Would have 4 16 seed games, and then 4 games with the at large schools.

RE: College basketball tournament idea
The only tweak I can see happening to the NCAA tournament is if the conference tournaments shed fans because the conferences are so large and choose not to exist.

I could see the NCAA go from 68 to 128 for one more round with schools playing the first weekend for spot in the 64.

So, what is lost? A school like JMU, who did not have a great regular season, would not be allowed to make a run in the conference tournament to qualify for the NCAA. Conference tournaments work well for teams that can put it together at the end of the season.

What is gained? Another weekend of exciting games where teams play one extra game. Maybe a home game for the upper seed.

What we should remember- A 16 seed has never won against a #1 seed. I think this is the first year a #15 seed has made it to the great 8. While not perfect, this tells me that there are not that many teams capable of winning the NCAA tournament left out. Expanding does not add quality.

No thanks. I will still complain if my team is one of the bubble teams that doesn't make it. A tournament of 347 teams is called "the regular season."

Even better idea: let the committee choose either the regular season or tournament champion from each conference. Whoever the committee doesn't select automatically qualifies for the NIT. For example, this year Charleston Southern (RPI 190) would be in the NCAA and Liberty (RPI 287) would be in the NIT (and Liberty would likely have played Kentucky)

Don't say "Never". I was reading an article by a marketing person concerning the decline of the ACC tournament (i.e. tickets are available).

Of course, you could be correct. The Big XII had a great tournament in Kansas City this year.

And, while watching much of the Big Ten tournament, I kept thinking that the Big Ten Network was made for weekends like this. (I could see the BTN going after other events like the Frozen Four NCAA hockey tournament)
