kind of curious that it's for 2015. Wonder if it'll be other sports in 2014 and then fb for 2015.

It sounds like New Mexico State was chosen to backfill in case Western Kentucky leaves for 2014.

Possibly WKU is not going to leave until 2015 either depending on how that announcement goes.

As I've said on other threads the SBC can only move up so many schools from FCS at one time due to the need to have 5 home games against fully transitioned FBS competition.

True, but like UTSA and Texas St played in the WAC in 2012 after being in the FCS the year before.

2 Years after you declare you're intention to move up & are invited to a FBS conference. that's why Charlotte is joining CUSA in all sports except football in 2013-2014 but won't play football until the 2015-2016 league year

Charlotte is different because they are a start up program.

Texas St declared in Nov 2010 and their first year in WAC was 2012 season.
So, by that calendar- declared in March 2013, 1st year should be 2014. Unless one of two things:
1- they're going to be a FBS indy for 2014 season prior to 2015
2- they're going to make the FBS callup official after the 2013 FCS season, allowing them to play in the FCS playoffs 1 last time this year.

UTSA played in the WAC in 2012 as a 1st year transition school, and played pretty much an FCS schedule (they had a D2 and an NAIA school on their schedule). 2013 is their second year of FBS-to-FCS transition and they'll be full FBS members in 2014. Texas St. was in their 2nd year of FCS-to-FBS transition in 2012. They are now full members for 2013.

We'll see on Weds., but I'd bet that these two will be full members for 2014, with FBS full membership complete in time for 2015.

As far as I know, App is joining for all sports in 2014. We'll be FCS Independent in 2013 , FBS Independent in 2014 and be fully eligible for football in 2015.

Right now our 2014 schedule has @ Michigan and @ McNeese. I'm guessing we'll be playing a Sun Belt schedule, but nothing is for certain yet.

I'll be interested to see their facility improvement plans...App State previously went on record and stated that student fee's would not be increased in order to move up to FBS....that seems easier said than done with the number of scholly's they will have to fund as well as the improved amenities in order to be able to schedule home games OOC.

why would App be FCS independent in 2013 if they are still in the SoCon for all other sports. Shouldn't they upcoming season be their swansong for FCS football and the SoCon.

App is going to do very well. They have a tremendous administration that is 100% behind this as well as passionate, proud fans and alumni. Being able to move alongside an old rival too will be great for them!

True, but like UTSA and Texas St played in the WAC in 2012 after being in the FCS the year before.

The first transition year will likely be 2013 (making both App and Ga Sou ineligible for the FCS playoffs), second would likely be 2014 and full FBS bowl eligibility 2015. They'll play a full Sun Belt schedule in 2014 would be my best guess. Or it could be staggered to lessen the financial impact. My thought is the earlier you transition the better.

The WAC was forced to admit UTSA and Texas State a year earlier than planned because they didnt have enough members if my memory serves me correctly.

The Sun Belt grabbed two of the best schools available. Should be great performers for the conference.

That's my take as well. If WKU leaves in 2014, NMSU steps in as a fully-qualified FBS member.

Do the SoCon rules require NCAA tournament appearance for their regular season champions? That would answer the question if they do, since App St. wouldn't be eligible for the FCS tournament if they won the conference.

It still could work as a bit of a farewell tour ~ it wouldn't be surprising if they have a lot of SoCon schools on their schedule.

I don't think that's an issue is it? The SunBelt would have two years to reach 8. It's entirely possible the SunBelt eventually invites NMSU for all sports, but I don't think the 8 minimum thing is an issue. Plus it seems likely that Tulsa will join the Big East at the same time as Navy, which is also 2015 I think. (maybe 2014 can't remember), wouldn't that be when WKU leaves the Belt? Anyway, the WAC operated at 7 this year, I don't think it's an issue for the SunBelt.

I could see the Belt using the WAC like the MVFC uses the Summit. Schools like NDSU and Montana could possibly play football in the Belt and Oly's in the WAC.
