Tubby out at Minnesota
Not directly U.C. related, but he did coach just down the road.

Wonder if his firing was related to his reputed aversion of the off court glad hand/promotion side of coaching?

UM suffers from a lack of funds and an 83 year old gym, plus the A.D. has connections with at least a couple of the up and coming (and proven), younger coaches.

Tubby...perhaps the most unappreciated of the top-tier coaches.

Me. too. I don't follow Minnesota that much, but they made the tournament...you'd think that would be enough for a school not known for its basketball prowess.

Their AD came from Virginia Commonwealth and was the one who hired Shaka Smart. I can't imagine Shaka would take that job since he can go to about a couple dozen other jobs tomorrow if he wanted it. Another name to watch out for his Alabama HC Anthony Grant. Grant was an assistant at VCU before taking the job at Bama.

Feel bad for Tubby. Guy is a class act. Maybe not the best basketball coach, but certainly the kind of guy you would want your son to play for. Not many people can claim a national championship on their resume. He did about as much at Minnesota as any guy could. Minnesota is not exactly the mecca of college basketball and not exactly a recruiting hotbed either. Leading his team to the round of 32 this year is no small achievement.

Can't see Shaka Smart going anywhere but a top 15-20 school. Guy has tremendous energy. Could see him at an ACC school like Georgia Tech or Clemson or Florida State or even at a UCLA.

me too. Tubby was pretty successful in Minnesota. They probably have the grand illusion that they should be beating IU and Michigan State all of the time.

Why would you doubt his coaching ability? Tubby's teams always looked exceptionally well-coached to me, if perhaps lacking in talent. Compared with Cal, he's more than twice the coach, if less than half the recruiter.

Tubby took Pitinos talent and won a national championship. I think hes a good coach but did UK ever get past the sweet sixteen when he was there, coaching his own players? Just goes to show you its more about the Johns and the Joes than the X's and O's.

Tubby is not a salesman, but he is one of the best bench coaches in America -- hands down.

I was impressed with the athletes on the Minnesota team this year and in recent past. Smith and his staff must have done a nice job of recruiting. Maybe something wrong with game planning or coaching or budget problems, but Tubby had some players, no doubt about it.
