That's debatable. I'd call the Astros tournament a weekend series.

Nobody else does. It was a neutral site tournament. Read Baseball America's tracker tomorrow and it will show us as 5-0 in weekend series.

UH wins 5-4 in 10. I went to this one. UH should have won in regulation - 3 Coogs thrown out at the plate, only one was an attempt that should have been made. UH bunting made Rice bunting look good. 2 strikeouts on foul bunt attempts, two bunts popped up to P. Zero successful sac bunts (ECU had 2) in what must have been 6 or 8 attempts.
ECU starter (Lucroy) looked good - 7 ip, 4 hits, 1 ER. FB was nothing special, but he was throwing the off speed stuff (down to 68 mph) for strikes.
The outcome of a bunt attempt is impacted by how the pitcher reacts and what kind of pitch is thrown. Got to give ECU credit for defensing the bunt too, sounds like.

RE: Rice at USM Game 3 (Sunday)
I will argue with Walt as much as anyone, at least when I disagree with him, and yes, he crosses lines from time to time, as far as I'm concerned . . . .
but it's usually out of emotion and over-investment in the outcomes and he really wasn't any better or worse today than any other day, IMHO.
And most importantly, he did apologize and admit he crossed the line today. So for that alone, I'd cut him some slack today.
I don't believe Walt wants the team to do poorly (and more than any of the rest of us do)
Walt's play by play is greatly appreciated, and his role in presenting pregame stats and any time he has researched numbers backing up a position - - - his value is also well known.
His color commentary skills, in the heat of the game, . . .. I'd hire someone else for that job, at least on a Rice broadcast. Walt's got too much skin (emotionally) in the game.

Regardless, I still cringe when I read that we haven't lost a weekend series all year. The 0-3 results ... best lineups against best lineups ... is still something to be pretty concerned about, so saying we're 5-0 in series papers over that blemish.
After years of dominating UH, I'd be pretty upset to finish 2nd in conference to them in a down year for the conference (and for the state of Texas for that matter).

But it was a weekend series where we threw our top three weekend pitchers and we (ostensibly) went up against the top three starters on the other teams. Perhaps one of them saved a particular pitcher against us but you can't discount that weekend altogether either. Outside of Stanford, we have yet to have a weekend series where we've played a team with a winning record. I don't think winning all of those weekends was that amazing of a feat. Even Stanford lost a weekend set to Utah this weekend.
The good news is outside of UH, no one in the conference is playing that great this season. We tend to play Houston very well. However we play at their place this year and we also have to play them right before finals.
My point continues to be people tend to over-react when we win and tend to over-react when we lose.

Walt, you and I agree sometimes and disagree a lot, but I don't see where you are crossing any lines.

Agreed, Mike. Mocking Walt's name is beyond juvenile and not what I'd expect from a Rice grad. That's probably why I've always assumed the Mort/Ira troll is an 11 year-old boy. If anyone knows his parents, please ask them to turn on their Net Nanny. Thanks.

I45, I'm in no way suggesting that I'm not concerned; just that by all metrics that matter for seeding and hosting purposes, we still haven't lost a weekend series. It matters. Yes, the Minute Maid tourney drove me to drink (heavily), but at the end of the day I still want the best postseason position possible for our Owls. I'd much rather host a regional than be a traveling 2 or 3 seed (as I'm sure any Rice fan would). From what I understand and have seen over the years, winning weekend series is a big part of that. Right now--as far as anyone in the country knows--we're 5-0. I'll take it. Would I rather have swept the Minute Maid tourney and be 3-2 in weekend series?? Maybe, but probably not. Teams play 3-game series for a reason. So far, any team we've played 3 games against, we've taken at least 2 from. That bodes well for hosting a regional; that's my (minimum) hope for the team. That's all I meant. :)

Good points. From my perspective, it was a point of trivia that really didn't matter. I suppose it does, but with strength of schedule concerns (much less just winning the conference), I'd happier if it were 5 weekend sweeps. Winning series 2-1 may just not cut it when it looks like there is only one other team in conference that could conceivably compete for the conference title. Given the weakness of the conference, a dominant team should be able to sweep... at the very least, sweep their home series.

Per Aaron Fitt, 10/25 ranked teams lost series this weekend.
While we may have some holes in our team (what team doesn't?) we are still undefeated in 3 game series this year. If we keep it up, we can just let the other teams clear themselves outta the way.
The series against UH should be extra fun this year. Both teams will want to win it for more than just bragging rights, and it looks like we may face some quality opponents for the first time in a while.

Didn't Stringer win the JCCWS with quite a few from the Navarro JC team ?

No idea. Is that where most of the Jucco transfers at UH came from?

Two from Navarro (Pruitt, RHP & Saturday starter, and Grayson, DNP yesterday). Most of the '13 Cougars are newcomers. Of the 10 who started yesterday there were 5 freshmen (1b, 2b, 3b, DH, RHP), 1 RS freshman (rf), 2 JUCO (Pensacola, Grayson; SS, C) and two lettermen (cf, lf). Their weekend rotation is 1 senior, one freshman and one JC transfer.

Casey Grayson is injured (again). He is taking a redshirt and will return next year. So too is another Sr. JC guy: Jacob Lueneberg.
