He was athletic, smooth, and averaged near to 10 points/game, without much support around him. In his second year he seemed to be brushed aside to make room for the coach's 6-7 transfer and some time was given to a walk on. Delino has a couple of games where we scored double figures but most of the games he had very little playing time. Why? Then this year he was moved down to the end of the bench. I still can't believe that, given the potential he demonstrated in year 1, that he couldn't be a very effective player at the MAC level. What's the story?
What I don't understand is why some assume that all of Cross' players loved Toledo and wanted to stay here forever no matter who the coach was and that mean old Coach K drove them out by being cruel because he wanted to lose with his players rather than win with some other coach's sloppy seconds. If we had all of Cross' players (and that would mean we'd be minus most of Coach K's) do you seriously think we would have won more games this year? I don't.

No one is assuming that here. Deere was a Kowalczyk recruit. I never thought he was very smooth, always seemed like a project. I doknow that when he was in the game there was a coach assigned to yell"Delino! NOooooo! Nooooooo!" I'm serious-that happened game in and game out. I sit right behind the bench. I don't think he ever got the defensive adjustments and with his length, switches and correct position were crucial if he was going to be the stopper at the backline. Having watched Boothe's steady progress in terms of position defense I can see why Deer's inability to grasp it was frustrating. Still, I thought he could give 8-10 a game. Somehow he found the entrance to K's doghouse but never the exit.
