Rice vs. USM (Friday Night Game)
Quote:Rice Owls@RiceOwlsdotcom1m
Rice lineup: Leon Byrd CF, Stainback SS, Cook LF, Stringer 2B, Teykl 3B, Aquino DH, Fox 1B, Ratterree RF, Perrott C, Kubitza P. 6 pm start.
I guess Coach thinks Cook's patented opposite field hitting has more potential than Teykl against Pierce. One thing is for certain-- with Pierce pitching, we better be ready to swing early in the count. He doesn't walk batters and his slider is just as difficult to hit with two strikes as AK's slider.
BTW, tomorrow's game (Saturday) moved up to an 11:00am start due to weather forecast.

RE: Rice vs. USM (Friday Night Game)
Play ball!
Byrd leadoff double into the opposite field gap! Way to start.
Stainback fouled out to LF. Not very good situational hitting there.
Cook grounded out to 1b, with Byrd advances to 3B. (That's what we needed Ford to do.)
Stringer flied out to CF.
Yet another early wasted opportunity. We let Pierce off the hook with poor situatioal hitting. Love Ford, but he cannot bunt and he fails to move the runner up on a consistent basis; something a #2 batter simply HAS to be able to do. Note-- with a runner on 2B and no outs, Ford should have been looking for a pitch to pull to the right side. What's he going toward LF?
Scoreless heading to the bottom of the first inning.

Don't know. Several years ago, USM made it available for free.

Austin allows a one-out single, but then induces a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.
Teykl ground out to SS.
Aquino popped to 3B on 2-0 count.
Fox opposite field single on 2-2 pitch. Nice AB.
Ratterree flied out to RF.
Scoreless heading to the bottom of the second inning.

Geez. Leadoff walks has plagued AK all season long. Flirting with danger.

Ugh, that last double was brutal. (A bit of an infield double)

Leave the room for five minutes and when you return we're down 3. Geez I thought this would be 1-0 or 2-1. Not Kubitza's inning, I guess.

Well, maybe Pierce will have a lousy inning. Eventually.

RE: Rice vs. USM (Friday Night Game)
Austin's control issues finally got the best of him. Walks two batters, who both score on a double into the gap...then he grooves an 0-2 pitch to the #9 batter, who singles in another run. He was fortunate a 4th run didn't cross the plate on a fluke double. AK must have throw 30 pitches that inning....so he's once again going on a high pitch count. Going to be one heck of an uphill climb going against Pierce, especially with our penchant to waste opportunity after opportunity.
Perrott fouled out to C.
Byrd hit by pitch.
Stainback grounded out to 2B, with Byrd advancing to 2B. (Now why couldn't he have done that in the 1st???)
Cook clutch single, but Byrd thrown out at the plate. I agree with the aggressiveness in that case; you had to take the chance. Unfotunate.
Down 0-3 heading to the bottom of the third inning.

That would make his off base average .574

Not the way we wanted to start conference play. Let's hope Kubitza can settle down after that brutal 2nd.

BTW, terrific AB by Cook, who fouled off a couple pitches to get to a 3-2 count before singling.

Another leadoff walk. AK just doesn't have it today. Aside from the control issues, he's not missing bats today, which is VERY unusual for him. His fastball must not have it's usual movement.
