Butler's tab
It's amazing how much money Butler has spent to get to the Big East...

last year-
Horizon exit fee 300 k(est)
Horizon NCAA unitls left 13.75 mil
A10 entry fee 700k
total Horizon left 14.75 mil
this year-
A10 exit fee 2 mil
A10 NCAA units 1.5 mil times number of games
so anywhere from 3.5 mil up to 9.5 mil(plus any entrance fee for the BE)

So Butler will have spent/lost roughly at least 18 million dollars to upgrade from the Horizon to the Big East. That number could get as high as 24 million if they make the final 4 this year.

Worth it to leave the horizon for the big east. They got to throw in more $ to keep their coach too, i'm sure Northwestern will try to pry him or the VCU coach with no luck. I actually like northwestern going for ben howland, the heat at ucla is high, so maybe he might bolt for a long term deal at NW.

RE: Butler's tab
Not even close. Those NCAA credits are shared with the conference. They get more NCAA credits this year than last year because they're in a better conference this year. Next year's numbers might be even higher because they'll be splitting only the C-7's NCAA credits 10 ways, rather than the A-10's credits split 16 ways.

Total entrance fees + exit fees = $3 million. They'll more than make up for that in one year with the Big East tv contract.

On top of that, they'll have bigger conference opponents (more attendance), more games on tv (more ad revenue from their stadium sponsors), and higher NCAA tourney credits. Butler's going to be swimming in money. They'll have more money than Notorius B.I.G., without the problems.

I could see Northwestern going for Butler's coach- but not really VCU's coach. don't think he'd be a real fit there.

But aren't the ncaa credits earned shared with the rest of the conference? So if they stayed in whichever conference they earned credits for, they would only get a share of that money, right?

don't think they get any money now from the A10 this year.

Also, they won't get a cent of the C7's NCAA money at all(or the A10's this year even if they weren't leaving).

that's true- maybe half. so still a lot of money- at least 10 million dollars. Plus I think they now forfeit their tv money this year from the A10 if I'm not mistaken.

I would never say never, but if Stevens ever left it would not be for Northwestern. It would be for a school that actually has made at least one NCAA tournament.

It's actually this year a good year for not many openings yet in the big conferences. Really only Northwestern, Texas Tech, and USC so far.

As far as Stevens is concerned, Mike Krzyzewski won't coach forever.

And the Big East they're joining isn't close to the conference this years version is. No Louisville, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Cincinnati, or Connecticut.

They dont have a choice because if they dont, someone else strong (in the Atlantic 10) will jump at the chance meaning their conference home is further behind the curve.

They will get more tv money in the Big East versus the Atlantic 10.

Its pricey but its a no brainer.

Every conference I know of shares credits equally. So its more like 1/10th (or 1/16th in the A10). Its not really that much considering they will be making $2-$3 million more a year just in TV money.

One rumor is that if USC hires Jamie Dixon from Pitt, Howland will go back to Pitt to escape the heat in Westwood.

RE: Butler's tab
As an A-10 fan, I think we all knew Butler was a short time add.

The A-10 benefited for years by the freeze from the Big East. Cincy froze out Xavier, Villanova froze out Temple, Uconn froze out Umass. Unfortunately, the freeze got unstuck.

We'll do just fine (the A-10 stayers are 3-0 in the tourney so far). We'll grab two teams to get back to 12 and move on from there. Most of the A-10 stayer schools are quite wealthy, but all the money from the leavers is a nice parting gift.

UR, VCU, GWU, SBU, URI, UMass, SJU, LaSalle all have represented the conference recently. Duquesne and Fordham, well - the first was the price for getting Xavier for a decade and a half. Fordham.....we should just kick them out. And then add GMU, Davidson, and one of Hofstra/Drexel/BU/Sienna/Northeastern.

Its still a 2-3 bid conference most years.

Actually, the A-10 does NOT share credits equally. Butler will be giving up more of what it earned in the A-10 to leave.

for the A10 it's an interesting thing. They have gotten 2.7 million from them in Entry/exit fees and now with a win 3 million in NCAA units. 5.7 million- plus 1.5 million for each win from here on to the final 4. Was it worth it?

Seems like it would have made more sense for the A-10 to simply add Georgetown, Villanova, and Marquette. The A-10 could have just booted Fordham and taken St Johns. The C-7 wouldn't have had to keep DePaul, Providence, or Seton Hall.

That way, the C-7 wouldn't have had to pay millions to keep the Big East name (whatever that is worth) and the A-10 teams leaving wouldn't have had to pay anything.

But Georgetown certainly wouldn't stand for playing in the same conference as GW (they won't play GW period), Villanova tries to pretend it is separate from the other Big 5 teams (hasn't really been true in the last decade or so), so its no go.

Sure there's some junk in the A-10 (just like DePaul is junk in the C-7). But in the A-10, teams get to keep more of what they earn, so its not like they'd be having to subsidize Fordham or Duquesne.

Leaving their crediits behind in the A10, Butler will make more money from a loss to Marquette than from a win.
