Rice Pro Day Today
@ricex: Anybody at Rice or Houston Pro Day? Saw Chase Clement yesterday and he said he was in town for the trials. Updates appreciated.

McGuffie off to a good start with a 39 1/2" vertical, and 11' 2" broad and 26 reps of 225lbs.

Cook and Willson both had impressive verticals of 37" and 38" respectively.

McGuffie runs a 4.37 electric timed 40.

Wilson comes in with a good time too of 4.53.

Great times for those two guys. Willson's time would have placed him 2nd at the combine among TEs, behind only Chris Gragg who is 5-10lbs lighter.

Do the notable measurables for McGuffie, Willson, and McDonald lead anyone (besides Hambone) to believe we underachieved on offense last year, or might these just represent conditioning advancements they have made over the last 3 months?

Throw me in that pool as well. Definitely underachieved given the talent we had (IMO)

Not sure how measurables not in game situation can tell me that.

Definitely helps that Willson and McDonald are now healthy.

Let's just keep picking at that scab.

While at the collegiate level, athleticism does play more of a role, the football playing ability still wins out.

If this wasn't the case, you would see a lot more track and field guys playing football.

I agre we didn't use Willson correctly...if he would just have taken off the boot he was wearing and run his 4.53 we could have been a lot better.

I think they only bolster what was already apparent from the play on the field.

Hard to say how much is on the coaches though, since receivers are generally dependent upon the ability of their QB..

If they all get drafted, then I think we may be able to talk about wasting talent.

Until then, I think we need to stop speculating about wasted talent based on some measurables. We're starting to sound like Al Davis.

From the Rice football site regarding last year's offense:

In 2012, the Owls produced the second-most productive offensive season in school history, piling up 5,556 yards, 414 points and 306 first downs on their way to winning the last five games and capturing the Armed Forces Bowl Championship.

Gil Brandt's write-up:

Sounds like Willson's workout was all-around excellent, he may be late-round pick now.

I just spoke to Phillip about the pro day. He said Sam did great as was expected but that Luke did really well! This is so awesome....

So which two NFL teams were NOT represented at Rice today?

Interesting. Wonder if his outlook on CFL has changed. (I guess it has or they wouldn't even be offering).

Wilson was hurt from the second game onward with high ankle sprain, and that's why his production fell off. McDonald missed three games with injury as well.

Jared Williams was asked to try his hand as a fullback during the pro day and did exceptionally well. He really turned some heads today with his speed at 4.88 and agility. I think his flexibility didn't hurt him any.

Kyle Martens flat-out boomed the ball this afternoon. One official time on one punt was 5.96 seconds. If he had been standing at the 25 yard line, his average would have been over 50 yards per kick.

Chase looked very good today...sharp for the most part, especially considering most of these guys he never threw to before. Will be interesting to see what happens.

RE: Rice Pro Day Today
It's great to see the pro interest in so many Owls.

Regarding the question of whether we have wasted/misused talent in the past, I think we have to consider how Rice recruits football players. No one would disagree that we face some real structural obstacles and that means our coaches have to focus harder than most on finding players with potential, those diamonds-in-the-rough who are overlooked by other programs. The reasons these young men are not widely noticed might be that they are late bloomers physically, late in getting serious about the game or were poorly coached/utilized in high school. I think about some of the guys from my era like Michael Downs and Darryl Grant who seemed to develop more quickly than most in the late college/early pro phase of their careers.

So my thought is that our coaches are spending more time and effort than their peers in other programs to help our players catch up. Sometimes that means they (the players) hit their stride late in their college careers.
