OT - Barbara Hershey character from The Natural passes away

An interesting story - the comments are equally interesting. It's amazing to think how a story like this would play out in today's world compared to 65 years ago.

BTW, this is off topic to an OT thread, but am I crazy for never really liking the movie, The Natural? I love the music but that's the thing that stays with me the most about that movie.

I also thought the movie was very overrated. There are several better baseball movies out there

I thought it was overrated, too. Haven't read the novel.

To paraphrase George Will*: Most movies, like most of most things, are overrated. The Natural is certainly one of those things.

*Will was actually writing about literature when he said:
"The bad news is that any fiction counts as literature, and most fiction, like most of most things, is mediocre."

The Natural, for me, is a perfect example of how one tends to zero in on different aspects of the same movie as one ages. As a Little Leaguer I just loved the part when he knocks the cover off the ball (or, as put in that great baseball movie The Sandlot - "busted the guts"). Once it became apparent that I couldn't hit but I could pitch I fell in love with the part toward the beginning when he strikes out the Babe Ruth character next to the stopped train. Now, the most memorable part is the game of catch with his son as the movie concludes.

That said, yes, probably a bit overrated. Really like the George Will quote, George!

That sounds like a lot of Wills' columns!

Several years ago on vacation I read The Natural.

By the end of the novel, I hated Roy Hobbs.

The Natural was a "Casey at Bat" novel and does end with Roy striking out. I did not mind that. I hated his immaturity and lack of insight to the caring of the characters surrounding him.

I love the movie and feel it is one of the best movies ever made. It is the only movie adapted from a novel that I think is superior to the original. Early cuts of The Natural had Roy striking out. I have never seen this version but I believe it would have worked very well. The Natural works as a movie due to rewriting of the characters surrounding the NY Knights. Roy is mature and caring of his relationships. The movie celebrates the mythology of baseball.

The movie is released with the game ending and life changing home run. That home run is clearly inspired by Reggie Jackson's HR in the All Star Game at Detroit.

It is an emotional release of redemption.
