UConn women rout Louisville for 8th title

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -

Freshman Breanna Stewart scored 23 points and Connecticut won its eighth national championship with a record 93-60 rout of Louisville on Tuesday night.

The victory tied Geno Auriemma and the Huskies (35-4) with Pat Summitt and Tennessee for the most titles in women's basketball history. It was the most lopsided victory in a championship game.

It might not take long for Auriemma to pass Summitt the way Stewart and the rest of his Huskies played. His prized freshman was unstoppable, hitting shots from everywhere on the court.

The loss ended an unprecedented tournament run by Louisville (29-9) and left UConn as the only team to win both the men's and women's titles in the same season. The Cardinals' men's team beat Michigan on Monday night and coach Rick Pitino was in the crowd trying to spur on the women's program.

It wasn't enough.

Beilein was terrible tonight. Didnt use his timeouts to stop the bleeding

Waited too long to put McGary back in
Had McGary and Burke in with 4 fouls when they needed to foul.
Ville up 4 with 39 seconds left ran 19 seconds off clock before michigan puts them on the line

The missed goaltended was worst non-call of tourney
Burke had all ball on his 4th foul. His 2nd foul with 11 minutes in 1st half was terrible. Hancock jumped into him and there was still no contact

Wow, I actually thought Louisville shot very poorly. They had so many layups, in the second half they only had 2 shots that weren't 3's or in the paint, for as poor as the Michigan D was, to shoot below 50/60% from 2 is not that good. Louisville was +10 in Turnovers and Offensive Rebounds, that should win most games easily. 27-17 in extra possessions.

For anybody to complain about officiating, it can't be Michigan, the officials are what kept them in it, with 3 min to go in the half the foul count was 12-4 for the half, and 21-11 for the game. Michigan had to foul a few times just to get to the 1 and 1.

Apparently, HJ had money on Michigan. It is amazing how differently you can see a game when your money is on the line for the outcome. For the record, Russ Smith was 3 for 16. Not exactly lights out.

Numbers don't lie

Louisville shot 8-16 from 3 point land.- 50%.
They shot 33% for the year.

Louisville's strength all year long was their defense and getting points off turnovers. Michigan only had 12 TO's and Louisville didn't get many easy buckets off those. They still shot 46% Monday night.

You can cherry pick 1 stat and say Russ Smith shot poorly.
Just make sure you don't forget Hancock's 5-5 on 3 pointers or that they shot 50% on 3 pointers, 78% from the FT line and 46% from the field.

A number of write ups on the game talked about how Louisville's offense won the game. If Louisville doesn't shoot well- they would have lost

Missed Goaltend- 2 points

Burke's 2nd foul was a joke. Hancock jumped side way to TRY and draw contact. No contact- 3 FTs and Burke sits for 11 minutes

McGary got taken out on a rebound and was called for a travel.

Burke's 4th foul was ALL ball. 2 points.

Hancock (MVP) picked up his 4th foul with 11 minutes left but the officials gave it to Harrold instead. Louisville was down 4 at that point.
Who knows if they go on to win if he has to sit.

Louisville was up, the 15:07 mark was Michigan's last lead Louisville took the lead for good at 13:50 mark.

What's stranger shooting the 6'6 Hancock that's made 63 3's this year going 5/5, against small guards or Albrecht who had made 14 all year hit 4/5 in the game.

Louisville's strength all year long was their defense and getting points off turnovers.

Disagree, Louisville's strength all year was wearing teams down. Some games they got turnovers, some games other teams just got tired, I believe their bench has outscored their opposition in over 50 straight games, that is their strength, as is getting to the rim. Duke had 11 TO's, Wichita St had 10, and Oregon had 12: Michigan was no different.

You can cherry pick 1 stat and say Russ Smith shot poorly.

They were 13/34(38.2%) on Dunks and Layups... That's why it's poor shooting.
34 out of 61 shots were dunks or layups. Michigan was 10/16(63%) on Dunks and Layups. 16/48 shots were dunks or layups. I saw it as a game that very well could have been a 20 point game, but Louisville missed shots and Michigan made them. Their season average btw is 46% from the field.

A number of write ups on the game talked about how Louisville's offense won the game. If Louisville doesn't shoot well- they would have lost

Their offense did win the game, by attacking the rim, and getting there consistently and then getting offensive rebounds when they didn't.

As far as the officiating, Louisville was attacking the rim Michigan was not, and the fouls were still 22-11 in favor of Michigan(numbers don't lie) going into the last minute... disagree on the clean block as there was body, but they weren't calling anything on Michigan so I can see how a soft call would be bothersome. McGrary should have been called for a few more with some and 1's, he looked like a cape on Behanan a few times. And Louisville "shooting out of their mind"?: if Louisville hit their season averages on all shots they would have scored 79. Had Michigan hit their season averages they would have scored 71.

It's pretty clear we watched a different game

I will admit I stopped reading your post when you said Louisville's strength wasn't their defense or causing Turnovers.

RE: NCAA tournament thread
Block was as clean as could be. Not really much of an argument for a foul.
