by what moniker/nickname is middle tennessee known? I guess we had better figure this out pretty soon. I have seen various references lately. I am wondering if there is a handful of references for MTSU, like southern miss.

inside the state, we are USM. outside the state, we are southern miss. to a group over a certain age, we are mississippi southern. 03-wink

RE: Congrats to Middle Tennessee
Officially it's MTSU. Most progressive alums fans recognize the name does matter and can be detrimental. It's too long and wreaks of a JUCO name so we try to avoid it.

For that reason, we work in the reverse of UCF and UAB. The athletic dept officially only uses "Middle Tennessee" spelled out never an acronym. You'll never see the athletic dept use "State" in the name. The local paper doesn't follow suit though.

You'll also see some of us abbreviate MT for short. Occasionally some will use "Middle", but that's not necessarily preferred.

Until/unless we officially change the name we're not going to be able to get around MTxx which is pretty much the only way I'll use the four letter acryonym, but our preference is Middle Tennessee or MT for short.

When the band plays the fight song, it's "MTSU...MTSU...Go Raiders Go!"

Inside the 26 mile marker of I-40, they call us "Little Middle"

On the football field, USM and Memphis call us "Daddy"

thnx for the 101. I saw "middle" used a few times over the past couple of days, and it seemed awkward.

At least it doesn't end in CC like ours. CC=community college. I'd HAPPILY take MTSU as a moniker over UNCC.

Fair point.

Probably easier for you guys to get around that by just using Charlotte than it is for us though??

Generally I believe most people prefer Middle Tennessee, and some just say MT. Instate some just say 'Middle' since there is an EastTSU and use to be a WestTSU (Memphis, this was never their name but if they had continued the naming scheme like MTSU & ETSU it would have been. They were West Tennessee State Teachers College). Some alumni from the 70-80's call us Mitsu, like the beginning of Mitsubishi but I really hate that one.

That preeetty much covers them all, I think. Some of the older guys might know some I don't.

The women's team and fans will be in the new football club section for tonight's ladies selection show. I'd recommend stealing a glance there, too!

Congratulations on BB and look forward to coming to MTSU next football season. What is the best hotel to stay for football games.
Again, welcome to Cusa +1.

Unfortunately, there aren't any hotels walking distance to campus. Best hotel in town is definitely the Embassy Suites, after that the Hampton Inn and Comfort Inn & Suites on Thompson Lane are the newest. The Doubletree is older but nice, Crestwood is the closest to campus, without staying in a dump.

Has there been any discussion about changing the official name of the university to the "University of Middle Tennessee"?

It's a battle that's been lost, more than once I believe. Other schools have fought against it.
