Nice to see that ranking...but W-A-Y early, yet

Yes, but interesting how fast we've started vis-a-vis peers and vis-a-vis prior years.

Agreed. Also, it will be very interesting to see how recruiting lays out if the program continues the success of the 2012 season and parlays that success into multiple CUSA championships and bowl games.

Looks like the Rivals site is now under new management.

Thanks for your work and contributions, David Mooney.

David did a great job, and put in a ton of time and effort to keep us informed.

What happened to Moondog? Is this mangagment change voluntary or was Dave Mooney forced out?

Hate to see Moondog go. Never got to meet him. He definitely worked hard and really opened up our visibility to the program.

RE: 2014 Football Recruiting
In order for the Rice Rivals site to ever be successful, people are going to have to stop immediately sharing premium information. When a new recruit would sign with Rice and it would appear on Rivals, the time span before it was posted here was usually measured in minutes. That completely undermines Rivals' business model. In some of the more egregious examples, the posters would take credit for the scoop themselves (or fail to attribute credit to Rivals).

04-jawdrop

VBO is right and I am definitely guilty as I just realized I posted info about a new recruit without giving Moonie credit. In my defense, I never meant to take credit, rather I just noticed that no one else had brought the information over. Most of our football conversations here are pretty repetitive (Coaching, Greenspan, Conference Realignment, etc) so it refreshing to be able to discuss football outside of the Parliamentarian paradigm. Still, I definitely never meant to undermine Rivals. Thanks for pointing this out VBO.

Agree partially with the premise, but not the example. Commitments are not premium information. They're made public on the site when they happen, the news is tweeted out when they happen, etc. It does make me cringe when some posters will relay some of the information that is behind the paywall, though.

I think the bigger problem with the site is that there just isn't a critical mass of fans to keep the place active, and the content wasn't being produced frequently enough.

You rivals members, why don't you go over to the sight and raise hell about DaVID NOT BEING THERE ANYMORE. I would like to see a public outcry about this!

Do we know that anything wrong has occurred? Maybe David just didn't have time for it anymore, his posts and entries had become less frequent.

The new guy seems eager enough. Speaking of keeping things behind the pay wall he has some good notes (including on a top lineman target) from a camp he stopped by today.

Hey guys, I've obviously parted ways with Rivals. We couldn't agree on several issues (support from them in terms of rankings for example) so my contract with them wasn't renewed. I still plan on being around Rice Athletics. I'm talking to a couple other networks about doing some things with them.

In the meantime - Westlake OL Calvin Anderson (6-6 240) is a Rice commit. Denzel Thomas is not and he camped at SMU this past weekend...

Thanks for checking in moondog. Let us know where you end up. What are the other legit ranking networks? Obviously Scout and ESPN. 247? Not sure who is really legit.

So Denzel Thomas decommitted?

I wouldn't so much say decommitted as looking for a better academic fit...

As I understand it, 247 was started by the original Rivals.com founders. It has probably the most flexible and modern platform of the lot (better photo and video integration, twitter integration). And they've developed some nice new features like a "composite" ranking system that compiles the rankings from the big 4 (Rivals, Scout, ESPN and 247) for every player and then generates a composite ranking that can flow through to program's class rankings and so on. Also a commitment prediction system where their publishers can predict commitments as prospects progress through their recruitment.

But currently it's not hugely useful for Rice fans as without a Rice dedicated publisher there isn't much (or accurate) information.

I haven't bothered with Scout since Moondog moved to Rivals and ESPN gives even less time than Rivals to recruiting beyond "major" programs and Top ~500 national prospects.

RE: 2014 Football Recruiting
Rice added a commit from Manvel Offensive Lineman Cory Klingler to their recruiting class today.

Klingler likely displaces early offer Tryston Mizerak as the Center in the class. If not over the ball he's definitely an inside guy.

He joins a trio of 6-6 OL - Calvin Anderson, Hunter Ponder, and Sam Pierce - in what is a very impressive 2013 OL group...
