that Memphis should make it to the Sweet 16. I was listening to the College Sports Station (XM 91) on my way home from church. Gave us big praise for going undefeated in conference. He also said Memphis only major non-conference win within the past 2 years came from Tennessee but that should not mean anything. Plus he mention how he recruited Joe and Tarik but they was #2 to him because they know if they came to Memphis that their mind set will be to get and win big at the NCAA Tourney.

It's nice he admits a win over TN doesn't mean anything.

I took it as that they (Memphis) only big non-conference win was against Tennessee but do not take them lightly in the tournament.

Actually, I think that's how he meant it too. I just decided to take it a more logical and factual way.

Actually, yesterday Pearl was going off on the talking heads because of their 'these wins mean nothing' crap about lower ranked opponents. They were saying that wins out of the top 100 RPI didn't mean anything. He was getting so pissed. Talking about how if you lose to those teams, suddenly they matter. But when you win, it's irrelevant? He was pissed. I was kinda glad he said something.

He may be a slimeball but I can only imagine what kind of team he could mold out of the talent we have and have signed.

But, in a hypothetical if CJP leaves icky way, he would be our slime ball. So nobody else needs to talk chit about him. Do we like Pearl now?

He's probably no slimier than X, just not as slippery. But slimy coaches that wreck their programs on the way down should not top our replacement list.

I've always had a love/hate kinda thing about Pearl. I hated him because I felt obligated. And he reminds me of Cal in so many ways. So there's that too.

But there's no denying he'a a helluva coach. Bottom line is though, we really don't need to give the NCAA any reason be sniffin around.

As long as we stay away from the 8/9 seed there isn't a problem with this.

And hes right that win over UT means very little nowadays.

I had no doubt that this would somehow morph into a 'Bruce replacing Josh' thread.

Pearl should never be considered as our potential coach. Find an Illinois fan, they'll give you an earful about him. That's not including the mess at ut.

I thought it was he that blew a whistle to NCAA in '09 about Rose. Still not satisfied with who deep throat was.

All I know is, Bowen needs to kindle a relationship with Pearl. If JP leaves you call Pearl and have the presser announcing his hiring within hours if JP leaving. If you do that you keep all of your recruits. I don't see Paz taking recruits. He's to good of a guy to do that.

Pearl is the coach you hate if he's against you but adore if he's for you. I was living in Ktown when he took over for the vals and he opened a few practices to the public. He's intense, a disciplinarian, and a great x/o coach. He understands the Memphis brand and understands how to market a program. As far along as Paz has come, one thing he has failed miserably at is marketing our program on a national level. The country has basically forgotten about us. The Pearls and Cals of the world, as slimy as they may be, they understand marketing, and they know how to schedule opponents that get you on national TV almost every out of conf game. Pastner just doesn't seem to understand that aspect yet. I'm sure in time he will. And I hope that's with us for the next 40 years, but if he leaves, Pearl & Memphis would be an amazing love affair.

There's no more 'taking recruits with you" deals anymore because it's prohibited by the NCAA, therefore I don't think Coach Pastner leaves anytime soon unless he whiffs in the recruiting period. If these new laws were in place when Calipari was interviewing in Lexington I doubt he leaves Memphis when he did.
