MAC has to happy with the results of the new format. They got Akron vs Ohio in the finals with Akron/Kent St semis finals. You can't draw it up any better. Going forward MAC needs to have better seasons from the other 9 schools. 3 teams have carried this conference. No reason the MAC can't put up numbers like the MWC and A-10 have done and have a tournament where the second round and quarters are packed to the rafters.

I'm sorry, but that is just laughable. The 2nd round and quarterfinals of the MAC tourny will never draw well, unfortunately. It might help if the MAC can move the finals to Sunday, semis to Saturday, Qtrfinals to Friday, and 2nd round to Thursday. The way it is now, it is hard for people to take off from work to see a 2nd round and/or quarterfinal match-up on a Wednesday or Thursday.

With the casino down the street that probably helped boost sales a bit. That is gonna make the MAC tournament very exciting for those students and alumni looking to party before and after the games. Hotels should be offering package deals for those out of town.

Personally, I'd prefer they take the top 8 teams, give the top 4 teams home court for the first round, then play the semi's and finals at a neutral site.

Gentlemen,
Not to throw cold water on the attendance figures.....the two finalists were from the State of Ohio, and the the game was played in Ohio. If, you can't get the people of Ohio excited about that, then the MAC will be in big trouble. What do you think attendance would be in Cleveland with Northern Illinois playing Buffalo for the championship?
Don't misunderstand here, I'm glad there was a great turnout for the championship finals this year. Just keep in mind with both schools not from Ohio, and being in the championship game, attendance could be much less.

+1

The bottom 1/3 of the conference being in the tournament is silly.

The bottom 1/3 of the conference being in the tournament is silly...but its basically the same thing as 6-6 teams going to bowl a game.

What about when OU was the 9 seed in '10(?) and won the MAC Tournament, then went on to beat Georgetown in the NCAA?

Dear Ken,

Ypsilanti, Michigan is closer to Cleveland, Ohio than Athens, Ohio is. I think attendance at a MAC Tournament held in Detroit would've been higher if two Ohio teams were playing than if two Michigan teams were playing.

not a chance. If WMU was playing CMU in Detroit there is no way an all ohio final would outdraw that matchup 05-nono

Dear Optimist,
I don't necessarily disagree with your logic, and yes, the Ohio fan base had to go as far as you said. I still think with six schools of the MAC located in Ohio, you have a much better chance of having interested fans show up then with what I postulated in my earlier post.

Eh...I should just say out of Basketball threads...I have absolutely no interest in the sport.

That's easy! It never would have happened, and nobody would care that it didn't. Another MAC team may have pulled off a first round upset themselves. Or not.

RE: MAC Tournament Attendance
Akron, Kent St and Ohio fans know that they got a legit shot to win the tournament and expect their teams to make the semis or title games every year. Down year is only making the semis. Average year is making the title game and a great year is winning the title game. You don't credit for 5th place and a quarterfinals exit if you Akron, Kent State and Ohio. The expectations to greatness not mediocrity. Coaches don't last long in this league if you aren't regularly making the semis and title game.
