i agree with you, bracketology and all this other seeding stuff is about 10 years behind the stats revolution in baseball, football, and basketball. if you have a bunch of opportunities to get big wins at home and on the road and convert a few, it doesn't mean anything. i don't think people do a good enough job of evaluating the different numbers of opportunities. a big 10 team probably got 12 shots at a top 50 win, 6 at home. a top 100 team should win 3-4 of those as a matter of routine. but it's not presented that way, it's just "They beat team a, b, c, and d, so they're very good.
actually, brainiacs, a top 50 team should go .500 against other top 50 teams, generally speaking, so a team that's 5-9 against the top 50 is probably NOT a top 50 team
