It is the Graduate level and the research that makes the difference in how low information people evalute the programs. I am still in firm belief that at the undergrad level everything is about the same no matter where you go to school. You study the same topics out of the same texts.

Very cool. I was actually the head of NIU Robotics 13 years ago, but no one carried it on after we left. I am really excited that these guys have started this up again.
About the whole school ranking issue, it's all about money. The people who do the rankings, which turn into public perception, do exactly zero research on schools like NIU. Really all they look at is the amount of research money that the professors bring in. And schools like NIU trail quite a bit, but the reality of it is most of research money is done by the professors and the only affect it has on the students is a professor who is more concerned about his research than teaching. NIU consistently receives the same accreditation levels (and sometimes better ) than UofI.

Thanks for the info. I think that's the problem with a lot of college rankings. Research is fine, but how good are the schools at actually educating the kids? Problem is, that's harder to quantify, so it gets ignored.

A lot of rankings also look at test scores and yield level (essentially how many kids you deny entry) to provide an indication of the quality of your student body.
