A lump sum paid to Maryland for future travel expenses for years to come? Yeah....right. Nice cover story for getting money to Maryland to help pay the expected exit fee amount.

In regards to Rutgers, they don't have nearly the exit fee to pay. Also, they wouldn't have gotten in without Maryland agreeing to come first.

Yep, you got it.

I lived in Washington DC for almost 4 decades. It is a marvelous sports town. DC really supports sports.

It is a "national city" in the respect that alumni from all the states live there via the legislative and the consequent national organizations (lobbyists) and many schools from many states have a "branch office" there for extension programs. I knew Sunday which college team won because I would then see the T-Shirts pop out on Sunday folloing a victory.

Maryland is going to move DC from an "ACC" oriented town to a B1G oriented town....and I believe the B1G and Maryland pull will be so strong, that Virginia, Va TEch, and NC cannot ignore B1G.

For what it is worth, Both Maryland and Virginia considered themselves easterns schools. As an aside, so does Georgetown. It is this eastern orientation of the C7 schools and BE football playing schools that I felt the Nbe proposal would not work.

I live in DC and if you think DC is going to be a Big Ten town because of Maryland, and pull on VA and VT, you are smoking some awesome stuff.

Now Maryland can dangle the Rose Bowl and B1G Network plus all sorts of goodies to recruits. DC, like NYC, has a boatloads of B1G graduates. B1G, with DC and NYC, is going to take financial advantage of that via adding Rutgers and Maryland.

Yep, you got it.

Rutgers was obviously an afterthought. Certainly doesn't suggest that anyone expects Rutgers to make up their share of an extra cut of conference disbursals. Nor frankly does even the most optimistic BTN projections seem to work for Maryland. Big10 members are almost assured of making less money per school having added these two. Yes, their per school payout will increase with their next contract, but MD and RU will have very little to do with it and almost assuredly will not make up the difference of splitting it for two extra mouths. This makes it look like a pure strategy move to counter the ACC's northeastern push, and frankly, looks somewhat desperate. PSU must have been raising some serious noise.

It does have a lot of B10 alumni, as well as a lot of alumni from everywhere. Maryland football isn't going to impact it at all. Dangling a Rose Bowl is hilarious...it has no cache out here over the Orange or any other...which will be even more true with the playoffs. You think the BTN is going to get cable companies in DC to pay 16X the rate they are now (the instate rate for the conference) for that network for a few bad Maryland B10 hoops games? B10 better invite Duke.

Oh well... If I am correct here the Big XII did something similar assisting WVU with their exit fees.

True! The Redskins are family and the Nationals and Wizards and the NBA women all have strong attendance.

But so does Georgetown and Maryland. DC is not that far and I can envision many B1G alumni taking in a B1G away game to the nation's capitol, and, for that matter, the Big Apple.

IIRC the Big 12 loaned WVU money to help with their BE exit fee. The Pac-12 gave CU an advance against future conference distributions to pay their Big 12 exit fee.

But this is reportedly a gift from the Big Ten to Maryland, not a loan.

The Big 10 is not waiting around. This is a signal to the rest of the ACC that their exit fees will be reasonable.

It's only a matter of time now.

I agree there Lazydawg, if Maryland pays $20 million then they are only paying what they agreed to pay. Only Florida State might be able to leave for $20 million because they too voted against the increase. Everyone else agreed to $52 million so that is what they will pay.

Besides if the subsidy is for $30 million it sounds like the Big 10 office realizes that the full $52 million will be owed by Maryland. In which case nobody else will leave, because they would have to leave in pairs and that would cost whatever conference they were headed to $104 million and nobody is paying that. That would be a charge of 7.5 million per member school in the Big 10 and SEC it might be doable if spread over 3 or 4 years, but not as a 1 time upfront charge.

Wow, a whole lot of assumption going on here.

I think it is safe to say that we all agree this is not a travel subsidy it is to help with exit fees. That does not mean this money will go directly towards exit fees. It will go into a fund to help with travel expenses going forward and then monies meant to go towards travel expenses will be shifted over to handle whatever expenses there actually are with the exit fee.

What I do see are a bunch of ACC folks that are assuming this means that the exit fee will hold. It COULD mean that but it does not signal that such is the case for sure. This could have been an originally agreed upon issue that the Big Ten would cover the expenses of leaving the ACC because the Big Ten really needed them to move at that time to counter Notre Dame's move. That would mean if that is the case that 20-30 million is now what the exit fee is expected to be.

The above is a possibility just as much as it is possible that the full exit fee will be upheld and this is just helping to cover part of that cost. It is one thing to discuss possibilities but some of you are grasping for straws and ignoring the fact that there is more than one straw in the cup.

It could mean what some of you are saying but there is so much more to this than any of us know, you aren't doing yourselves any favors by jumping to conclusions already, especially if it isn't going as you hope it is.

I think this is a powerful message to the ACC and their potential defectors that the B1G is not intimidated by the ACC exit fees. The SEC will probably do the same thing...

I don't think that's clear. It could still be "cash up front" by deferring the BTN buy-in payments. It was already reported that Maryland needed a higher initial cash flow.

And you aren't spinning? You have no way of knowing that the Big Ten's money to Maryland is only part of what Maryland will have to pay, you are simply assuming that because you are hopeful that is the case. That means you are making a spin job too.

That makes you a hypocrite with your proclamation about him.
