Wonder what kind of odds you could have gotten in 1965 if you had been willing to bet that within 50 years Creighton would be higher in the intercollegiate athletics pecking order than Rice? The basketball Big East is definitely higher up. The Leftover East, not so certain.
Of course, you could replace Creighton with several other schools and ask the same question. That's how much things have deteriorated at Rice.

Creighton makes some sense. It is a Jesuit school like Marquette and Georgetown.
Rumors that butler and xavier will join. Xavier is also jesuit and those two along with creighton provide some geographic balance to the conference.

What would have the odds been though if we had decided say back in the 1970's or 1980's to stop playing football and concentrate on the other sports instead. It's not going to happen now, but I've maintained for decades that's the road we should have chosen.

Problem is that I'm not sure how business model can work unless you are located geographically close to other like-minded schools. In the northeast, we would be; in Texas, we aren't. McKenzie made the same point, although in different contexts. We would probably have had to go to the Missouri Valley Conference to implement that model, and that would have meant a lot of long and bad and expensive trips for non-revenue sports.
I do agree to this extent. I think we should have made basketball a priority back then. If we had put together a 20-year basketball run like what Wayne has done with baseball, we would not be worried about conference affiliation today. And while we probably couldn't have put together that kind of run in football, we could have with basketball if the resources had been devoted to it.
Being in Texas, we probably must have football to be viable. But we have a realistic chance to become good and stay good in basketball. That chance is probably a lot slimmer in football. So making basketball the feature program would have made a lot of sense at one time.

The MVC (which has been pretty good in hoops) makes a lot more geographic sense for Creighton than the BE. They also have a long history with the MVC schools. Of course these days those two things appear to mean almost nothing in conference movement decisions.

Maybe St. Thomas would fit better in the new Catholic league.
