Well, since the cat is out the bag that Laing is gone, who would people like to see patroling the Pope Parquet for the Boys in Orange next season? Who would be good fits for the program and the school? Who would help us make "the leap"?

I have a lot of coaches I would love to have. But I have to be realistic. This is my #1 pick even though I think it is still very unrealistic. So I am big fan of anyone who comes from a strong coaching tree (Pitano, Coach K, Dean Smith, Knight etc). I agree that we should get someone who fits who fit well in are university. So my pick is JEFF CAPEL. Reasons:

1. Proven track record and success at mid major and BCS basketball.
2. He is young 38
3. Comes from a strong coaching lineage
4. He is from Fayetteville
5. He would not have to move his family
6. I think he is looking for a new coaching job.
7. Coach K is not looking to leave anytime soon (so if he gets replaced by him hopefully he can develop a good assistant under him to replace him)
8. He seems like a strong man of faith
9. He can recruit
10.) Maybe he can bring in a Duke transfer cough cough Alex Murphy!

Why we wont get him:
1.) He will probably look to go to a bigger more established program (which after his stent in Okla don't know why he would want to)
2.) Money don't think we will pay him that much

Any thats what I think I understand if you guys think it is a long shot.

There is a .0000000000001 % chance we can get somebody with head coaching experience from a Power Conference, regardless of how successful.

If you look at the other head coaches Roller has hired since he got here, the name I keep thinking of is Muggsy Bogues. He would be a hire almost identical to Mike Minter was for football. He would be a publicity hire, but he has head coaching experience. He is currently coaching at United Faith Christian Academy in Charlotte.

I'm taking a shot in the dark here but regardless of who it is they need to have credentials that the players will respect from day 1. He also needs to be a good x's & o's guy, which is one area that Laing fell miserably short in.

Muggsy is an interesting pick. I think he would be great for a publicity standpoint, I think he would be good from X and O's. I also think the players will respect him. I just don't know how great of a recruiter he will be and his lack of experience from the college level. I think if he is going to get Mr. Bougues I think he needs to get some established assistants under him. Roll humps!

Not to take this thread in another direction, but a quick note about UFCA....they finished 18-5 this year, winning their last 10. They were not eligible for the Indy schools playoffs due to some weird interpretation of an e-mail sent by the headmaster (recruiting violation).

They are ranked as the #17 team in N.C. (combined public/private) by USA Today.

I had no idea there were so many independent schools in the USA Today N.C. poll....10 of the top 25:

RE: So where do we go from here?
I would love Jeff Capel (or Wojo, for that matter) or Bobby Lutz from NC State, but I think FightingCamels2014 is right. I don't think we have a shot, mainly because of money.

Muggsy is interesting, though, and someone I had not considered. I am not sure how I feel about with his lack of collegiate coaching experience. I think we need someone who has spent considerable time working with the Xs and Os of basketball operations at a collegiate level. But he does fit Roller's MO. So, it is a viable option.

Of the list that RVAparks sent, I like Chris Jans, Mike Rhoades, Michael Huger (going to be tough from a power conference), Jayson Gee, Ron Sanchez (see Huger), and Kevin Mcgheehan. I think we may have the best shot at Jans or Rhoades.

I also like Brian Ayers and Mark Price from Belmont, Jim Fox from Davidson, and Matthew Graves, Michael Lewis, and Terry Johnson from Butler, and that list could grow.

I know that Capel would be a long shot (I would be ok with his brother). I just was thinking of someone who fit are University and be a good coach. I would love to have Wojo or Collins the reason why I am little hopefull for the is that Laing was an assistant for a major DI program and he came to us when are program was not as far along. Plus neither one of those guys would have to leave their family. BUT like you guys said I think it is going to come down to MONEY!! Tim Fuller from Missouri I think that is another guy that could be wonderfull but I think he is going to look for something bigger. So I like Mike Rhoades because the system he is coming from I think would fit are players. Are players would learn how to play defense, and play with confidence. Smarts system is all about unselfishness. Are players would be in wonderfull condition. \ I also think he is prime and ready for a head coaching opportunity. But I am becoming more and more intrigued with orangecamel prediction of Bouges. I think it may be a good hire. Because we are looking for an X and O's guy that will command respect I think he fits the bill 100%. He will command respect because he has what Mike Minter has. I made it to the league I know how to get you there if you want it. I was worried about the recruiting but he coached at the high school level for 3-4 years now and I think he knows this state pretty well. I also think just him being the coach is going to be attractive for people to come and play for him especially guards. I read an article about how close he is to 7 footer Peter Jurkin. Maybe we could get him to transfer. But again this a very attention to detail level were rules, grades, and amount of hours you practice are monitored. So again I think he needs an assistant with experience that can help him transition. But if were to come next year, I think he would have an immediate impact on are team. Way think out side the box orangecamel.

When Gardner-Webb was looking for a new coach a few years ago, Chris Collins from Duke put in for the job. Not saying he will do the same for this one, but it gives me hope that we can get an assistant from a power conference to apply.

Collins would be awesome. How many players do you think will leave next year. Try to play some where else.

I'm not sure how many will leave. I have heard rumors that Darius Leonard is considering going overseas to play next year rather than staying. Also, according to Darren White's twitter, they are attempting to receive a medical redshirt so that he can play here again next season.

I've heard from a few people that Trey has said if Laing was fired he would heavily consider transferring. Not saying there is any truth to that and I hope it is just a rumor, but he and Laing were very close.

Regarding White, I've heard that they're looking at some time he missed while he was in JC in the hopes of getting a redshirt. Sounds like a glimmer of hope, but who knows how much.

If there are players that had rather go play overseas than finish their college career and graduate, then they are wrong for our University in my opinion. Replace them with Student/Athletes.

Would HATE to see Freeman transfer, obviously.

RE: So where do we go from here?
I would personally be completely against Muggsy Bogues. No college experience whatsoever and coaching at a private, independent high school isn't preparation to be a DI head coach. You're basically recruiting players to your school and then beating up on smaller independent state schools to build an inflated record. It would definitely be a Mike Minter hire, which I was not a fan of. Minter makes more sense for football though, because you're just not going to attract anyone to that job with real experience. As a non-scholarship program, you're going to struggle to win year after year and it's rarely a jumping off type job to bigger and better things. Hiring Minter makes sense from a PR standpoint and maybe some ticket sales. He's also independently wealthy, so the salary wouldn't be a huge deterrent. Bogues is also in a financially independent situation, but you have to have a higher standard for your flagship sport than a high school coach.

I think the job will attract decent attention from better qualified candidates. When a coach evaluates a head job there is one question to ask - can I win there? I think you can at Campbell. You are comparing the job to other conference schools and there isn't a reason you can't compete in the Big South. The facility is no longer a hindrance, the budget is reasonable for the league, and there really isn't a juggernaut program right now that has a strong grip on the league. You're not asking the coach to be nationally ranked, you're asking for top third in the conference. I don't see that as unrealistic at all.

I like the idea of Fox at Davidson. He would be great, IMO.

RE: So where do we go from here?
With the change-over taking place, I think it becomes even a slimmer chance White could get a redshirt. Also, I have heard the same things about Freeman. He has a year to redshirt and with two years in the Big South and proving he is among the best guards at this level, he could easily transfer up a league and play at the A10 or CAA level. You never know but ODU is jumping leagues soon and will be looking for players this off season (TERRIBLE year). ODU is also back in his hometown of Virginia Beach.

I wouldn't be suprised if you see other guys head out as well, but in these situations you just never know. I am personally not suprised at Laing being releaved of his duties, but expect things to get worse before they get better. If White is truly gone and Freeman does decide Buies Creek is no longer for him, a team that could have been better from this year to next immediately gets significantly worse unless the new coach can find some late gems in college basketball recruiting.

Winthrop fired Randy Peele and while they won two more games overall, the team's overall finish in the league was the same. Now Winthrop is probably better off in the long run, but the drastic results for the better were not noticeable. Same thing happened at Gardner Webb after firing Rick Scruggs and even at Radford after firing Greenburg. The only disappointing thing is I personally felt with essentially everyone returning from a team that finished third in the division and a possible first team all conference point guard the team was staring a Division Title and more in the eye. Now I don't think that is attainable, but I could be wrong.
