It certainly sounds like Allison has experience in recruiting to fit the specific mold of a University (playing at Liberty, recruiting at VMI).

Throw him in the mix with any other assistants applying from successful private mid-majors and make a decision.

Not sure how I feel about him. He seems like a talented recruiter, but so was Robbie Laing? I think we should wait until the dance is over before we make a decision.

RE: So where do we go from here?
Recruiting is not the problem. Coaching is. Knowing what to do with what you have. That being said it would not hurt to take a look at this coach from VMI and who went to Liberty. Looks like he has some potential.

I realize talent is always missed by coaches. OK I will give you that. Not to see talent in either one of the Curry brothers especially when their Father is Dell Curry who was a great shooter and went to VT is pretty bad and is a little worse than just missed some talent. When you have that type of kid dumped in your lap and you will not even take him you have some issues.
(Sorry but I did not even know who Greenberg at Radford was) Guess I picked up on the right Greenberg though.

I never said we should have kept Robbie. I have the same frustrations that you do about the end of the past few seasons. If we were going to get rid of Robbie don't replace him with Seth Greenberg.
That is all I was saying.

So basically you're saying you think Laing is a better coach than Seth Greenberg? I don't know how anybody can honestly think that Laing is a better coach than a 2x ACC coach of the year.

One of the names on RVAparks' list (post #8) has been on CU, Inc.'s payroll before.

I did not say Laing is a better coach. Where did I say that. I just do not think we need Greenberg. I do not like the style of play he employs nor do I think the type of athlete he will recruit to Campbell will fit too well. I always thought his teams were the roughest and nastiest teams in the ACC. They play a very ugly style of basketball that I personally do not like to watch.

If he was that good of a coach somebody would have picked him up off the college basketball trash pile by now.

I never said I thought he would be an amazing coach. I was just pointing out that the names of Greenberg, Collins, etc. were pipe dreams and Allison is more along the lines of the level of coach you can expect.

My only question would be, if CU hired Allison (and I think that is a BIG IF) or the like are they really getting better? Allison has never coached at a level higher than the Big South. He has never recruited at a level higher than the Big South. Do you really want a head coach who has never been anywhere higher than the level you are currently playing at? Also do you want an ASSISTANT from a staff that over the last four years has won fewer games than the staff you are replacing? CU has won .492 while VMI has won .472 over the last four seasons.

Also, Greenberg was a finalist last year for the SMU job before Larry Brown was hired. Trust me on this one when I say Greenberg will land a job at a school with more national appeal than Campbell. Regardless of what anyone thinks of his coaching ability or the players he recruits, VT was in a position to fire him because of the turnaround he orchestrated with that program. The Hokies were a non-competitive perennial last place team before he took over. As far as recruiting, Greenberg may have missed on the Curry's (alot of coach's did) but he certainly could recruit. He was the one responsible for this year's ACC player of the year. Only the third player in school history to win such an award.

I agree with you, Statman. It seems like Allison would be, at the very best, a lateral move. And as others have mentioned above, it would be a pipe dream for us to go out and get an ACC-quality assistant (one can still hope, though!). As I have mentioned before, too, I think going the route of a high mid-major (SunBelt, a good SoCon team, Ohio Valley, etc.) or maybe even an A-10 school and snagging an associate head coach or assistant would be our best bet. The biggest thing, I think, is showing that the coach has been part of a winning tradition and is used to winning. I think there needs to be a changing of the culture to more of a "we expect to contend for a Big South title and be playing for a championship" year in and year out instead of "I hope we win one tourney game". That only comes from someone who has been there before and who has won. I wouldn't even want an ACC assistant from Georgia Tech or Wake Forest right now because they haven't been winning and I would take an associate head coach from an A-Sun school like Mercer now.

So, to recap: 1) Roller, please, find someone outside the Big South, or at least higher up the totem pole than we are now (and have been recently) and 2) Find someone who will change the culture of the program.

RE: So where do we go from here?
I know most seem interested in a Muggsy Bogues hire. I for one don't like it particularly much. As stated above, I'd like to see a proven track record at this level or higher. Yes, it would be good for publicity, but I would rather our basketball team win games than make a temporary splash with a coaching hire. We'll see if his announcement at four today has anything to do with us.

RE: So where do we go from here?
fightingcamel the odds that one random post is him saying he is accepting the Campbell job is low so you may be in luck. I think the recruiting boost he could give, the publicity, the boost of energy to our fan base, the experience of having been where these kids want to be is worth a risk. He also brings with him experience in a unique coaching job as a head coach in the WNBA. Though I 10000% understand your view and have the same worries with this I think it's worth the risk.

Exactly how I feel! The only thing is I just wonder if it's worth the risk.

RE: So where do we go from here?
I don't know about the rest of you, but the win over Georgetown by FLorida Gulf Coast last night gave me hope. FGCU is a school that has only had classes for 12 years meaning this was only their second year of eligibility for the NCAA Tournament. For them to not only get in but win the first round is a true accomplishment that seems unbelievable at first. This is a team that Campbell was in the same conference with a few years ago. It just goes to show how proper recruiting, resources, and coaching can have such an impact on a team. With that being said, I hope we find a coach who can take us to that next level. Not saying that FGCU necessarily is a different level (They are this year.), but rather that Campbell can find success as a mid-major program and compete for the conference title every year.

RE: So where do we go from here?
I will state this again. The next head coach at Campbell will be a #2 assistant at a mid-major to BCS (mid-level) program. If it is someone with head coaching experience (I'd be surprised), it will be a someone who has been let go or fired from a simliar program as Campbell.

I would be beyond shocked if it was a "name" hire. I don't think Campbell can pay a "name" hire and then subsequently meet all the demands that a "name" hire would have (i.e. bigger budget to pay assistants, etc).

Mugsy is a stretch at best and would be an unbelievably bad hire. His name only resonates locally and I'd be surprised if a high school kid even knows that much about him to make a big hit in recruiting. This is Mugsy not Alonzo Mourning we are talking about.

Word is that a new coach has been chosen! Not completely sure if it's true or not, but that comes from a fairly reliable source. From what I've heard, it is Bobby Lutz. Lutz is currently the associate head coach at NC State. I'll have to say, if it is true, I am thoroughly excited to see what he has to offer! Here are some links to find out more about him below.

Color me shocked if true, but in theory he was fired from Charlotte. So he does meet one of the criteria I expected. We shall see in the coming days I suppose.

The twitter feed on wralsportsfan.com indicates Lutz is involved in talks with Troy for their next coach.

He'd fit an apparent requirement for Campbell......Danny, Jerry, Billy, Robbie, Bobby?
