Here's the thing, there are several issues working against you. Weather, stadium size, fan support, facilities. Forget Big Ten teams, most will never come play at our place, not the good ones, same for the B-XII. They aren't going to leave their massive stadiums to play at a 24,000 seat stadium in cold arse weather. Also, they'd rather play in Ohio, Texas, Penn., Fla. in more recruit rich areas.
ECU had the same issues back in the 1980's, the only two "BCS" teams that came to Dowdy-Ficklen were FSU and Miami, but that was after play at their place 3 times. Plus, we'd sell out our stadium 36,000 at the time. After the 1991 season 11-1, 9th in the nation that started to get better. But, it wasn't until 1998-1999 when we expanded to 43,000 that we could really start pulling in BCS teams regularly. Now at 50,000 we're larger than some BCS teams and can demand even home and homes on some BCS teams.
I vote to ban you. You speak too intelligently for a visitor, for die-hards to understand!
BTW, many points are right on, I have said for years.
Rome wasn't built in a day, especially by a school that less than 40 yrs ago was a teacher's school, had one bowl appearance in it's first quarter century plus at the highest level.
Want....need...reality. Words that get mixed up alot.
:clap2:
However, I was at the only ECU loss in 1991.
Yea, except for that one little flaw in the logic, that Toledo (along with other MAC schools) brings in good schools and their stadium isn't much bigger. Yes, neither NIU or UT is going to get Ohio State or Michigan there. But we should be able to get some good schools on the schedule. But that wasn't Compher's philosophy.
Has Toledo REALLY brought in BIG name schools? Colorado? Pittsburgh? Arizona? I mean KU had a good year when we scheduled them I believe. Better yes, but out of this world?Tell me ALL these "supposed" schools that would want to play at HS, not at SF for MORE money.
Also, can you think of any reasons why Toledo would attrack better?
My guess, guaranteed money, an easy in and out airport are pretty good selling points. Not fly into Rockford or O'Hare and freaking travel an hour+ to little ole DeKalb.Call Toledo whatever you want as to a shi%hole, it as 250k!
BTW, call SF whatever you want, it's $$$$$ in the pocket. If you really think a lesser school at home vs a SF game is better in the whole picture of NIU recruiting, $, exposure is better? I am against a SF game every season, but believe me, when you bring a recruit to SF, a local kid sees a team recruiting him playing on the field of his heroes, does wonders. You may not like it, fans on here may not like it, STH may not like it(and I think they get a raw deal on $ of SF tix) but the big picture is different. And if you look at the tope 32 attendances as posted in another thread, opponent means jack, unless they are rated. If you can predict which of the "limited" pickings of a Colorado, Pittsburgh, Kansas or the likes is rated, more power to you and other.
Yeah, NIU's home schedule this year is very subpar, but to just say as to MAC/NIU hosting attractive opponents as "well Toledo does it, so can we" is ridiculous. I may not know all the facts, but I know one thing....Compher and anyone in NIU AD know more than you, me and this board.
Just because someone says it, believes it doesn't make it true.
And to all for the "better scheduling" I woudl like specific names of schools that you think WILL come to DeKalb for 1-1, even 2-1.
Should be good.
Miami has repeatedly played Cincinnati, also Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Syracuse, and Northwestern at home in the past 9 years. Stadium capacity: 24K.
Kent State has played Iowa State, Boston College and Minnesota at home. Capacity: either 20K or 25K depending where you look.
Ohio has played Connecticut and Pittsburgh.
BGSU has played Boise (think that was at home) and Minnesota.
Ball State has played Indiana repeatedly, and Boston College at home.
Toledo has played Kansas, Purdue, Iowa State, Fresno, Colorado, Arizona, Wyoming, Boise, and Cincinnati.
NIU's entire schedule for that time frame is: SIU, Tennessee Tech, Indiana State, SIU, Indiana State, Navy, WIU, Idaho, North Dakota, Army, Cal Poly, Tennessee-Martin, Kansas. AND, we have no BCS games at home for the foreseeable future. Are you kidding me? We've had one of the worst home schedules in the entire MAC over the past decade. Easily. Please stop acting like this would be in place of a SF game. For the zillionth time, it wouldn't be.
Agree 100%. That is pathetic.
