Freshman Season
Ford, Berg and Miller are gone and Baker, Balls and Cravetta are here. The first 3 guys had a better freshman year than the guys we have. Turnovers 133-121, 3pt% 300-252, Pts 299-271, Field goal% 342-278, Free-throw% 698-701, Assists 138-113, Steals 47-73. The first numbers are Fords, Bergs and Millers combined averages and the second numbers are Bakers, Balls and Cravettas. Bergs 3pt shooting percentage is the best for a NIU player, in the last two years. Ford, Berg and Miller also had two more games last year.

RE: Freshman Season
I am no expert on basketball and while I am concerned about Monty's performane to date I also know that he faced an overwhelming task coming in. I think that he deserves another season to begin showing progress. I read the Huskiewire article on our stuggling offense and it sounded like we have a legit post player that transfered that had to sit out this year. I am hoping that an inside presense + an additional year in the weight program for this year's players + hopefully some better incoming players will = improvement. If there is continued drama with no improvement next year it will be time to begin looking ahead to an alternate future if NIU can afford a buy out.

RE: Freshman Season
Why are people expecting much from the transfer? I know nothing about him besides the numbers he put up before transferring. Was he well regarded coming out of HS? From the very little I've seen, I don't see him making much of an impact

RE: Freshman Season
At 6'11, Pete should help on the defensive end. He is more athletic than the Grays or Mader. Hopefully, Pete and Mader can play the center spot and the Grays can rotate at power forward. If, the Grays can combine for 13pts and 8 boards a game it would help a lot. Pete and Mader combine for 8pts and 6 boards a game really would help. The biggest thing Pete will bring to the team is energy and hustle. He will help, but he's not at the level of Kowal.

RE: Freshman Season
We don't seem to get a lot of easy buckets in the paint so a guy that is 6'11" should help with that especially in the MAC where size always seems to be a commodity and you often have PFs playing center. If we can get a presence down low then it will open up the perimeter. Then we need to find someone that can knock down an open look with consistency. I think Pete will be a nice add to the program next season.

RE: Freshman Season
I don't see that big of a difference in the numbers, really. Both groups didn't exactly set the world on fire as freshmen, which is what you expect from freshmen in a struggling program.

It'd be nice to a a guy better at shooting threes (Berg), but other than that, I don't think you're going to see any of the guys putting up major numbers at another D1 program and thinking "damn, that could've been for NIU."

RE: Freshman Season
Frisky bisquit, thats the point there wasnt much difference. Both sets of guys had about the same freshman year. Ford, Berg and Miller wouldve been sophs this year and likely better than the group of Baker, Balls and Cravetta. Berg made (27) 3's as a freshman. Baker, Balls and Cravetta made (34) 3's combined this year.

Ah, my fault. I assumed you were arguing that NIU had lost something. You know what happens when you assume? Sometimes you're wrong.

RE: Freshman Season
Everyone knows that I support Monty but the numbers dont lie. I would take Berg shooting 3's over Cravetta, Baker or Balls. Cravetta got a scholly and Berg never had one. Berg much more athletic and long. Berg should have had Cravettas and Christians role this year!

This is an excellent point. If you let guys go so they don't develop, and you start over with freshmen the following year-- who are not significantly better, then it is nearly impossible to move forward. You take one step forward and one back and end up in the same miserable place.
We need steps forward, even if they are tiny steps forward.

RE: Freshman Season
Fact of the matter is that last year's freshmen aren't the answer either. No division 1 players. We need to recruit better.

RE: Freshman Season
Ford had talent and berg was the best 3pt shooter on NIU the last two years. They could combine for 10-13pts. That would have been huge in several games. I am not sure what happened to Ford? I have never heard anyone say anything about him.
