Good article. Good to see the seniors start & get some action.
Nice info on the specifics as to why we played zone for parts of the game.

What would the score have been if we had inbounded every time to our own players? I heard at least three that were turnovers that resulted in easy baskets for UCF.

Yeah, we really got back and in position on several of those turnovers. I only remember them getting an easy basket off of one bad in-bounds pass.

I thought we played really, really well personally. Just from watching the game UCF had a lot of very lucky threes go in and we had quite a few 3s rattle in and out. That is just how it goes sometimes.

They actually only scored directly on one, but they went to the line two other times and one time Sykes missed a bunny that had less to do with our response than just a lack of concentration by him. It's not so much the points that we gave up; it's the fact we lost an opportunity to score on the offensive end on a play that just shouldn't happen. I thought Haase was going to lose his mind after the third lazy lob that got picked. His eyes bulged so far out of his head when he was yelling during the timeout I thought they might have gotten dislodged.
You can't fault the effort, though. We forced a lot of turnovers ourselves and played extremely hard. UCF is talented. My only issue with Haase as we finish the first season is managing the rotation. I imagine it improves with experience, and it's a lot easier to sit in the stands and focus on one thing than to have to manage all the issues at once in real-time. But Preston sat too much. And he seems to not have a plan for his regular substitution patterns. That could be partly because he looks at the bench and doesn't know what the hell to do; but at this point it is what it is.
The zone was definitely the right way to go. They got a ton of wide open looks because they moved the ball well (and they did get a ton of ridiculous bounces), but it would have been much worse trying to defend the paint in a man. And I don't know who would have guarded Sykes. I'm sure it's the fact that he's left-handed and funny-looking, but he reminds me of Carlos Williams. He just gets wherever he wants on the court and you can't really put your finger on how he does it. Just like Carlos, everything looks awkard and out of control, and then he scores.
