UC brings back Men's indoor track & field

Have to think the TT donation to Olympic sports is at least partially responsible. Also sounds like he is encouraging some of his players to run track. A complete 180 from the CBJ and BK.

"I was very excited to hear the news about the men's indoor track and field team," Tuberville said. "One of the things our team is founded on is speed. Our skill players will have an opportunity to improve their speed and mechanics while working in a competitive setting which is going to be a great advantage to us in the future."

Love it. This is really good for UC athletics. This also opens the door for the Raiders to draft one of our players in the first round, even if everybody else grades them as a 4th rounder.

RE: UC brings back Men's indoor track & field
I wonder if there will be scholarships for men's track and field athletes?
I thought all scholarships for men's track, CC and swimming were cut by MT. It'd be nice to see those re-established.

Nice that TT is supportive of football players running track and participating in field events. Cross training is good for both sports.

Isn't there a track in the Armory?

There are some very old dated facilities in the Armory that might include a track lanes but I'd be shocked if UC practiced indoor track there because of it's condition. Maybe UC will put some money into it to refurbish? There is a suspended track above the basketball courts in the UC Rec Center.

The local high schools CC/track teams that compete in indoor track pretty much run outside through the winter and then travel around to compete in indoor meets.

The women's indoor team practiced in the armory in the early 2000's. I'd assume they still do. The distance runners will be outside alll winter most likely. The track is 5 lanes and 160 meters around I believe. They won't be able to host any meets (maybe a dual) but its adequate enough space for sprinter and field events practice. It's very likely the men already train at the same time/facilites as the women do now, the only difference is they will be able to compete in meets.

There is a track within the Armory. I remember running in there back in the 90's. I remember the cheerleaders practicing in there (reason why I ran there). The facilities are very old.

I attended an alumni event before the GTown game, where Whit was a speaker. He mentioned upgrading the armory and making it viable for athletics once again. He never mentioned indoor track, however I wonder if this is why he wants to upgrade the facility.

The Armory need a new surface, new windows and some paint first, then the locker areas need updating. The seating just needs cleaned up and this could be a proud historic building. Please hurry!
