RE: Friends of East Campus Has Online Petition
I have to admit that I am bemused by the statement that demolition will allow for much more green space on the hill. Because that "green" will be paved over to provide tailgate parking. How's that song go? "They paved paradise and put up a parking lot"?

Done.
And yes, that song's quite fitting.

The problem with the "Friends of East Campus" is they're all fluff. They've been around forever and what do they do. Quack to the Gazette once in a while, tell how much they care, weedwack East Campus Hill on occasion, and get petitions signed. Fact is when it comes to getting people to pony up large sums of money, petitions aren't worth the paper they're printed on. If the school doesn't have the funds they don't have the funds.
That leaves the private sector. Soliciting funds from the private sector is hard work. Takes networking and a lot of phone soliciting. It's a lot easier to get people sign worthless petitions and tell the papers how much you care.

Cheer up, Suzie Sunshine. Let me see a big smile. C'mon, now. ;-)
Since you're busy soliciting funds from the private sector for this cause, there's really no need for you to sign the petition.
As for me, I'm lending my support to the petition in the form of my signature. I can't contribute financially, but I can do that much. I had 12 years of fantastic schooling in those East Campus buildings. And oh, if those walls could talk! Heh.

I don't have a dog in this fight. If WMU can't afford to rehab all three buildings they simply can't do it. If the "Friends of East Campus" truly want this done they should have been seeking funds ages ago. It's as if my neighbor wanted me to put up a new shed for him, and his family all signed a petition for me to do it. Worthless.

I remember when it was the Student Union, with a great little cafe/snack bar that served awesome burgers and fries, and a huge ballroom/banquet hall on the south side. State High students held their proms there. The top floors at Walwood were all men's dorm rooms, as I recall. This would have been in the early '50's.

The TKE's moved in there when their house burned down in the 80's. "Catch the TKE's, they're hot"
