yeah I was there in 82 and the talent on hand was amazing. I think 81 was arguably probably our best team ever but we have had so many really good teams it is hard to determine that. I do remember it being said at the time if USM was in the SEC it would at least be a middle of the pack school and possibly in the upper portion of the SEC. We won't ever know how we would do in the SEC because Ole Miss and Miss. State will be sure to see USM doesn't get in.

no school had beaten alabama and auburn in the same year for over 50 years until southern miss did it in the eighties, i cant remember the exact year. some one may have done it since then. southern miss will be ok

That was 90 Favres sr year. Curley hallman didn't come home with the team from auburn, he went to Birmingham to discuss the lsu job.

it was the only non sec team to do that since like 1904.

It almost happened in 82. we beat bama in bear bryants last home game and earlier that year had no time outs to set up what would have been a very makeable fg at auburn.

I was at the LSU game when we beat them 18-16 and Curley's last one there....could've heard a pin drop almost the entire game...they didn't care...they knew they had fkd up and that Favre made Curley...was with my future b-i-l (an LSU grad)....I just kept laughing at his disgust...so many good memories about the last 30 years of USM football.

A little Southern Miss trivia. Back in the 50's under Thad Pie Vann, USM had some fantastic teams. The 1953 team beat preseason #1 Alabama and Georgia. They went 9-1 in the regular season. The only loss was to Memphis. The team went to the Sun Bowl that year and lost to UTEP.

We try to forget they've won 35 of them.

that probably a better percentage than the other two schools in mississippi

MSU lost every single year from 1956 to 1993 except for 1980...a record of 1-37. Ole Miss's overall winning percentage is worse than MSU's, I believe.

My favorite fact about fighting jack russels football. Tulane actually has MORE sec championships than they do

I have a Jack Russell. Great dogs who will defend you until the end. Mine has scratch marks on his face from fighting off racoons. Bulldogs on the other hand are the derelict of the dog breeds.

not meaning to change this discussion to dogs, but I am a dog lover and currently share my life with a 10 pounds love bug of a dog called a Pappipoo. She is certified in the AKC's Canine Good Citizen program and does about 15 tricks which includes a cute one that is called Say Your Prayers, where she puts her front paws on my forearm while she is in a sitting position, then puts her head between her paws until I say AMEN, then she jumps back on her feet. A very cute trick she learned in one of her two tricks classes.

My dog is an AKC good citizen, too. We actually have her diploma hanging up.

I have a tendency to rant... maybe you've noticed. A lot of the time when I'm starting a rant, doggy just gets up and walks out of the room. I'll seriously be about five words in when it happens. That dog is smart.
