This response has detoured me on to another pet peeve of mine. I completely despise the phrase “all of the sudden”. The proper idiom is “all of a sudden”. The purpose of the idiom is to imply that something occurs out of the blue in a random fashion. When “the sudden” is used, it tends to imply a specific sudden and destroys the intended randomness of the phrase.
Since it's an idiom, it isn't necessarily wrong to use “all of the sudden”. It just doesn't work for me.

i was edumacated in missippy and i don't care...lack of capitalization and punk-zoo-ation intentionally omitted. I am glad I am not your wife.
