Birmingham history question
What was the name of the club that used to sit on Greensprings Ave roughly between George Ward and Dee's package store. It had a pool visible from the road. I'm trying to recall the name when it was a hot spot for big bands and jazz around the 1950s. I clarify that because I think it became something else (YMCA?) before it closed.

It was the F.O.P. Lodge back in the day. Across the road from Dee's A BEE C package store.

RE: Birmingham history question
Are you sure that's the same place? The Cedars Phoenician Club is still open and the entrance is across from the disc golf course...I don't think it can be seen from Greensprings. This place was vacant with that pool sitting empty for a long, long time in the 90s and, if I remember correctly, further down toward Dee's (but on the same side of Greensprings as The Cedars).

RE: Birmingham history question
The Cedars is down the hill a bit and on Cedar's avenue. Sorry for the confusion. The FOP lodge has a pool too, but it is looking more like a septic pond. Our group had a function or two at the Lodge in the mid 80's.

RE: Birmingham history question
As I recall, The Cedars Club was on the south side of Greensprings Ave across from the south edge of G.W.Park, while the FOP Club was actually on the east side of the Greensprings Highway, set low on the side of Red Mountain facing west and had a pool. Our PWP chapter used to have occasional socials in the early 80s at each.
