I still don't understand the apparent obsession with keeping Southern Miss or even UAB in CUSA East. Both schools are in the Central Time Zone.

If this were true my Huskies would not have played Portland State or Eastern Washington the last two seasons. That is the only thing about coach Sark that I do not like.

As for putting smaller conferences out of business so to speak, the one thing that the loss of the WAC really hurts is bowl match-ups. There is now one less conference to partner with. Jumbo size conferences also hurt because most bowls would not take 2 teams from the same conference unless forced to, so this creates more off limit teams. There are far to many bowls already but the matchups will most likely only get worse and more routine for the non-playoff bowls because of fewer but larger conferences.

I think some of it just relates to the fact that we've been screwed over so many times by CUSA that, at this point we're gun-shy. Seriously, they put a "no USM" clause in their Liberty Bowl agreement... despite the fact that we've produced some damned good crowds for them over the years. (That wasn't Utah that sold out the LB in 2003, when their stupid little committee whined about the matchup right in front of us.)

Southern Miss is ideally suited to play in either division.

But UAB...
MTSU 195
USM 235
WKU 255
La Tech 385
Charlotte 390
Marshall 530
Rice 670
UNT 675
ODU 710 miles
FAU 710
FIU 750
UTSA 865
UTEP 1275

Four of the six closest schools are likely headed CUSA East.
Two longest trips are CUSA West
Of the schools with the most similar attitude toward basketball (and former members of Sun Belt with them) are all likely CUSA East. Of the others with a similar attitude toward basketball, 1 East two west (USM and UTEP).

CUSA East: WKU, MTSU, Marshall, Charlotte, Old Dominion, FIU, FAU

That is a pretty nice East division on paper. A few schools in the CUSA West are getting screwed over though...

CUSA West: UTEP, UTSA, Rice, UNT, La Tech, So Miss, UAB

UAB is definitely getting the shaft here. I guess it doesn't matter though because they have their football program operating at such a low level right now. So Miss not as much and LaTech definitely not.

With this lineup, I'm not very pleased that Marshall has ZERO of its old conference mates in their division. I'd love to find a way to keep UAB East, if for no other reason.

Grab Arkansas State and one other western/central team (Missouri State? Sorry, but I'm NOT in favor of NMSU.) and bump UAB back to the East and just make USM/UAB a permament cross over.

Agreed.. the SBC is the one that's getting the huge help with the G5 contract, moreso than anyone else.

Quote:but Southern Mississippi needs to let it be known where they want to play, east or west.

Why? Honestly, USM has a history with both sides (marshall/uab; tulsa/rice/utep/la tech) and wouldn't mind either the Texas recruiting or the Florida recruiting areas. USM really can say it doesn't matter, we'll succeed on either side of the dividing line.

I will say I would prefer the west (if just for La Tech matchups)

Not necessarily true.. our basketblal games with Morehead and Wichita State were done at the request of Coach Tyndall this year. Bower and Fedora requested a couple of Big12/MWC games and got them. And I Think Monken will have a bit of say-so in our OOC schedules

RE: WKU Rumors swirling around BG
this continues to build. it would appear that all of this will fall out after the conference tourneys. BE will finish al of their conference deals. Then they add Tulsa, CUSA grabs wku...
