RE: 2013 Alumni Red Black Event
I was aware of the free reception in December put on by the Alum Association (also received great reviews this year) but I did not know about this event.

I could see my wife and I attending this in about 16 years after our kids are grown. Until then this is not something that would be on our radar as a to do as it does not include our kids.

Honestly, it was more the formality and the price.

Yes. I saw that "black tie optional" and I said no. In the past, I was at events like that where the black tie was "optional", and I was one of the few not in a tux. Thus, I stopped going to those "black tie optional" events. Too formal for my blood.

OK, I have eyewitness testimony that the majority were in suits. if its too expensive, thats one thing, too formal for your blood, c'mon, you are not from the swamps. These are events that expand your outlook and maybe just maybe you strike up a connection that may benefit you, called networking

If it's not a formal event, that's one thing. But when they say "black tie optional", that connotes a formal event to me where the majority will be in a tux. The fact that the majority were not in tuxes is great. NIU must have intened this to be a somewhat formal event or they would not have said "black tie optional". They would have stated "business attire".

NIU007 and I do not enjoy formal events. Is that okay with you? Set up a less formal sounding event, and I will be there (like the business casual holiday party).

To be perfectly honest, I would much rather donate the money I would have spent on this to the HASF, which is exactly what I will do when I increase my donation this year.

i really don't care if you go or not, but always a critism for everything. Black tie optional means you do not have to wear a tux. how much clearer can they be. My last post on this subject.

I think making it black tie optional ensures that everyone will at least have a suit jacket on, which is why they do it. Business attire now means some folks will show up in just a button-down and tie.

The event overall is like a grown-up prom...something fun once in a while.

And I repeat: I have been to black tie optional events where the majority wore tuxes and I felt out of place. Why is that so hard to understand?

Now that I know that the majority at the alumni event do NOT wear tuxes, I will most likely attend next year.

It is not a criticism of the event. Just that I do not like formal events. Is there a problem with that? Am I required to like them? Again, now that I know that the event is not as formal as indicated by the invitation, I may attend next year. Now, does that restore my status in Huskieland??
