B&BF, you do realize that if UAB truly needed more land to expand it could use imminent domain to gobble up more warehouses, old apartment buildings, & small businesses adjacent to the current campus... heck, as UAB just demonstrated a few weeks ago, they make good enough offers for real estate that imminent domain isn't even required.

RE: NBR: FCS Jackson State wants to build $200 million domed stadium
Emminent Domain is usually a last resort due to the prolonged legal battles it often sets off. Check out the fight between George Sarris and the Kirklin Clinic over his 21st Street restaurant (now Newk's) which he WON. That process is effective some of the time, but not always, and UAB does care about its reputation as a good neighbor. It may be that in the case you cited, UAB added to the fair market value of the property the potential legal costs of a court fight and made a better offer in the first place. My concern is that even if UAB took everything in sight between 3rd Ave south to 11th and from I-65 to 20th street, it might still not be sufficient for all the ambitious projects they have in their long range plans. My impression is that the footprint of that area would still be only a fraction of either the UA or the AU campuses. I recall that UA started off in 1831 with a federal land award in the then state capital of two townships in that area for a state university - that's 72 square miles just for a start.

I made two counter points:

1. UAB is a paying tenant.

2. Birmingham doesn't have a long list of alternative tenants.

1. Paying doesn't equal profitable, if one does something for pay and doesn't realize a profit, yet they continue to do it, what is that called? Charity? It really doesn't matter what it's called but I would vote for favor, at least it implies a future return.

2. UAB's alternatives are? Seems to be a codependent relationship.

1. If Birmingham feels ill-used by UAB, they should say so.

2. I don't believe I suggested otherwise.

1. How does my opinion equate to Birmingham's feelings?
2. I didn't suggest that UAB wasn't a paying tenant but that didn't stop you from assuming it. As a matter of fact my original post was more concerning the slanderous representation on the neighborhood and it's citizens than UAB or the city.

1. I don't know what that means.

2. Likening UAB to a (your words) "disgruntled homeless guest" might have led me to assume that, yes. As far as Legion Field's condition and environs, I suggest scrolling back up to post #16 in this thread for my opinion on the subject.

1. It means my opinion has nothing to with how Birmingham feels since I don't represent Birmingham in any form or fashion. To my knowledge, the city of Birmingham hasn't posted any concerns on this board, I did.

2. Do not need to scroll because my original post was directed at another poster but as usual you injected your $.02, so I gave you your change back.

Thanks. I've got a kid about to start college and every little bit helps.

I am just having fun, you seem to take jabs at me from time to time so I jab back. That last post was meant to be a sarcastic backhanded compliment "Smaugs $.02". I have a kid in college so you have my sympathies.

What point is that?

With all due respect, isn't it obvious after all these years?

After all our fuss over all these years, it still comes down to these choices:
A- Remain at Legion Field and gripe about it constantly until one of two things happen
#1- B'ham builds the MPF and UAB possibly / probably agrees to play its home games there, OR
#2- UAB builds its own OCS of whatever design and begins playing its home games there.

#2 can't even begin to happen until the system BOT grants its indulgence for our stadium plan. Is there ANY sign of that happening in this decade?

Playing on a rug was a concession I made grudgingly. Football was meant to be played under God's sky.

Dome are for people who play their football too damn far from the equator.

I'm not saying you are wrong, but off the top of my head, most domes I can think of are located in the south. The only ones I can really think of up north(again off the top of my head) are the Indianapolis Colts and Idaho Vandals. It is actually one of the big reasons I would like to see some of the SEC teams have to play some bowl games in cold weather areas. They claim their superiority over any Big Ten team, but always play in weather similar to what they were used to in the bowl season.

Thank you, knew I was missing some, but I just didn't think there was any large correlation between domes and climate.

Northern Arizona and North Dakota State play in domes. East Tennessee State used to before they disbanded football.

It is generally a question of really hot or really cold. Heated dome instead of the frozen tundra, or air conditioned dome instead of 95 degrees with 90% humidity.

To answer your question about #2, I don't think so, unless someone close to UAB with influence on this matter conveys otherwise. As for your #1, don't hold your breath, my friend. Too many social, political and economic hurdles to get over. What you've said about MAPS in recent postings still rings true to this day.

I still can't believe Arthur Blank wants to tear down and replace the Ga Dome - and have the city of Atlanta pay for both...

@WesternBlazer: I would really hate for Atlanta to tear down the Georgia Dome. That place still has "it"...Been there at least a half dozen times in my life, really love that facility. Wish Birmingham could buy it and have it shipped here, albeit totally impossible. I couldn't believe that Detroit sold the SilverDome for $500,000. How much was it worth at its' infancy, I wonder?

I also wonder how much Legion Field is worth today & how much the city would say they wanted for it if someone were to actually want to purchase it and take it off the Birmingham's hands(hypothetical - :wingedeagle:no one in his/her right mind would purchase that place)...
