125 Vision Town Hall 2/27
FYI: MAKE SOME NOISE FOR FOOTBALL AND FOR A NEW DIRECTION WITH BASKETBALL!

"Dear ETSU family,

Last fall, students, faculty, staff, alumni, and members of the community began having conversations about the future of East Tennessee State University – conversations about where we want our institution to be in the next 5, 10, and 25 years as part of our 125 Vision effort.

I want to encourage each of you to be part of this visioning process and to join me for an ETSU Town Hall/Workshop on Wednesday, February 27, from 4-6 p.m. at the Millennium Centre. The purpose of this event will be for members of our campus community and the region to learn about some of the recommendations being considered by our Committee for 125. These recommendations, put forward by a group of specialized task forces during the fall 2012, encompass a variety of opportunities, including possible new programs, goals, and initiatives that have significant potential to affect the growth, development, and influence of your ETSU in the future.

The Committee for 125 continues to seek your input as these recommendations are being studied in preparation for a final report to be presented later this spring.
During the town hall/workshop, you will have the opportunity to speak with each task force chair, review the recommendations and related data, and ask questions . Your views are extremely important as this final report from the Committee for 125 will be pivotal in positioning ETSU strategically for the next 25 years.

Again, I thank you for being part of this exciting time as we dream about the future of East Tennessee State University. You can learn more about these recommendations by visiting our ETSU 125 web site at http://www.etsu.edu/125/. I look forward to seeing you on February 27.

Sincerely,
Brian Noland"

I went to the Town Hall and as always was blown away by Dr. Noland. The meeting consisted of most of the chairmen from the different committees of the Committee of 125. Each gave a presentation of their committee with the findings and recommendations. The place was crowded and really should have been in a larger venue and I could not hear some of the speakers that did not use the microphone. A few people spoke about their areas and what they would like. One gentleman who was a professor gave talk on the importance of football on a college campus and what it brings to a school. There were not that many questions asked. My opinion was that this was another step in the process being carried out by Dr. Noland. It is like a baseball player touching all the bases after a home run and I think today Dr. Noland touched third base today. The man is competent and determined and wants a football team soon and will use it elevate the overall standing of ETSU. We are so lucky to have him!

RE: 125 Vision Town Hall 2/27
I've felt for years that ETSU was a sleeping giant. Dr. Noland has awakened the giant and soon all across the land the ETSU impact will be felt. He will fulfill all my dreams and aspirations for my Alma mater. Under Noland...ETSU will again rival the largest school in the state...MTSU. It's my prayer that Noland receives unilateral support that made the medical school happen. I was hoping the start date for football would be announced...but I'll have to be patient a little longer. It would be great if the ETSU community would get engaged now...and pack out the dome for Friday's game as a way to tell Noland...well done! He's done a lot in his first year...I look forward to the next steps. I wonder if he has a big ole chart showing future target dates for all he has in mind. I can only offer one suggestion for him....and that's to use a microphone when he speaks. Like so many, they think their voice is strong enough to carry a room...but no one should have to struggle to hear. Use the PA system as a matter of routine.

D.P. Culp was a builder. More significant buildings were put on campus during his time than any other I know about...Dome, Burgin Dossett Administration, Student Center and others. He also provided leadership in getting the medical approved. He was a lousy public speaker, not much personality....but he has accomplishments galore. Athletics apparently were not his thing...although ETSU did beat Terry Bradshaw during his time and the basketball team had their sweet run. The more I think about it, the comparison might be justified.

If Noland sticks around, and continues his current trajectory, he will far surpass Culp, imo. Culp *was* a builder, but a large part of that was the economic climate we were in. Much more money available from the state, moderately rapid growth, timing of aging original campus buildings, etc.

I couldn't stand Culp on a personal level, and he was extremely resistant to change in the flux of societal movement and progressive viewpoints. Extremely resistant. He didn't "get it". Very, very old school. On the other hand, I think he had some really excellent people around him, and really listened to their input. Obviously Quillen had a lot of power then and helped bring state $$ here for the med school, and the campus building boom in general. And Culp was much more accessible than any who've come after him - until now.

One of the most amazing and welcome things about Noland's presidency, to me, is his openness to talk to anybody, anytime, any place. There are still far too many layers of bureaucracy at ETSU, but at least he himself is accessible and open to talk and listen. Totally refreshing to see that attitude.

i ran across this on this site,,,,,, http://www3.etsu.edu/tours/tales/story19.asp

i can see noland repeating history,,,,,,,,,,

On another occasion, Dr. Culp accompanied the ETSU football team to a game against an opponent in Kentucky . The game was played in a downpour. Dr. Culp, dressed in a blue suit, sat on the bench with the team, soaking wet. Meanwhile, the other school's president was in the comfort of the press box.

The field was so muddy that identifying the players was difficult after the whistle blew. The officials and coaches practically had to count the players after every play to make sure nobody had drowned.

When the game ended, Dr. Culp drove straight home, arriving around 3 a.m. After taking a warm shower to thaw himself out, he slept for three hours and was back in the office at 8.
