RE: UNCW tonight
The CUSA competition will be a real mixed bag next year ... But definitely tougher than this year's CAA. Five of next year's CUSA have top 100 RPI's, and Tulsa is close at 109. And, there are four with 200+ RPI's. With that, think we'll have a real fight to get .500.

BTW, Andy Katz speculates today that ODU could be the best job in the new CUSA and calls out Dennis Felton as a logical candidate.

Razor,

Is it safe to say that our new coach will get a mulligan for the first season?

That alone will be worth the change.

Going .500 next year would be a victory in my book considering how boned we are on the interior.

Disagree. No mulligan, must show improvement and show some ability to utilize the talent we have and land recruits. We don't need to have a winning record, but give us reason to be hopeful.

Finally saw the highlights from last night. The oop from Palmore to Ross almost brought tears to my eyes.

Horrible home crowd. Student support at this point is downright pitiful. Embarassing. We have sunk below JMU in that department.

The players even looked like they were having a good time for once. Nice to see Batten get a little fire in his eyes...he was jawing it up with his counterpart on UNCW a little bit.

I disagree on the horrible home crowd. I think our home crowds have been fantastic since Corrigan has taken the reigns. It's a quiet crowd at times but the numbers are impressive and I'd say incredible for a 3 win team. Lots of schools would kill for our numbers and this has been the poorest attendance in years.

Now the student turnout is absolutely embarrassing. I don't understand what keeps the students from coming to a free basketball game in a beautiful facility on their very own campus. It's truly a shame.

The games are not advertised at all anymore. Of course students will find more reasons not to go when we suck. I'm disappointed Anton couldn't get me free McDonalds.

And games aren't exactly free for students. We give the athletic department $40.35 for every credit hour whether we like it or not.

I was there last week before the baseball game and they had a few billboards sitting around that mentioned it was gameday and that the game was ODU Baseball at whatever time it was. It looks like they can just swap that out with whatever team and time they want.

RE: UNCW tonight
Sure, the state of the team has a bit to do with the students not showing up, but it's still very sad. Almost zero support in that section. Maybe I'm just crazy, but I never missed a game as a student because of the simple fact that it was free. I also think this student body takes basketball less seriously because we have football front-and-center in Hampton Roads, which we didn't have when I was an undergrad.

All factors considered, I am seriously disappointed in our students. And it goes beyond basketball, really. There were even a few football games in which the student section was barely half-full. In my opinion, we should release some of the student tickets to the general public, since they're not being used. Someone will buy them, I guarantee it. Don't believe me? The old people still show up at a decent rate to support a team with three wins. And the waiting list for football is near three or four thousand (and multiply by three or four to get the number of tickets in demand).

My challenge to the students, if you're reading this: support our Monarchs. Stop being lazy, there is no excuse for your attendance this winter. It's utterly embarrassing, and it goes against everything that is being a Monarch.

They already sell student tickets at football games to the public sometimes. BTW we have four wins.

Yes, I know they open it up at the last minute. This isn't enough time for some to make plans to go, however. What I'm talking about is effectively reducing the number of seats reserved for students. If they're not taking them, there's no reason to offer them (for now).

And the crowd that showed up last night came to see a three-win team. They were treated to the fourth victory. Sorry if I worded it weird.

were you there last night??? The numbers were awful all around and it was quiter than most churches. It wasn't just the students.

I bet there were no more than 3,000 butts in the seats. That's sad for ODU. Even if we do have 4 wins.

The Northeastern and W&M games had nice crowds....last night was not though.

I was there, yes. The GA sections were about 50% full, but they certainly weren't that quiet the whole game. There was plenty of noise being made a good amount of the time because the guys were running all over the place making great plays. Was it loud all the time? No, but that's a typical GA crowd for you; reactive cheering, if you will. The student section is usually the place for noise to be made at all times (chants, heckling, etc.).

Keep in mind both NE and W&M were Saturday games, one being a rivalry and the other being the first home game for Corrigan coming off a nice win at Drexel on national television.

Talk to ODAF about what they have done with the Monarch Maniacs since they took it over. It should be a really short conversation.

Color me ignorant on those specifics. All I know is the Maniacs weren't exactly run well when I was a student, either. Almost no communication, and creativity was limited to random, profanity-laced chants. Looking back I'd take that over what it is today, though.

We definitely need some leadership to spur student interest. Not that I believe it is the University President's job, but the drop in student participation corresponded directly wil Dr. Runte resigning her position. Maybe a new coach can help with that?

Well this is true, but i'd take badly run over not existing. (Note I was never in any sort of leadership role with them, just a member for the last 4 years.)

I was a member my freshman year but then decided that it was not worth my $20 for the non existent organization. I am a junior now, I would love to somehow get involved to help try to restore the Club. I'm at all the games anyways.

I'd have been a Maniac, but they don't offer me any benefits other than 2 t-shirts that I probably wouldn't like since I already get into all of the games due to band.
