The Lauries, I don't know. I think they both wanted to go to Mizzou and Memphis was their fall back school. Some of the older posters might know more about why Laurie doesn't really connect with the school, but I think their is a story.

I don't know Derrick Rose is pissed with the school, but he can't like that lawsuit from the Memphis attorneys over the 2008 season.

Oh that's Laurie's wife. Miss Walmart. Gotcha. Laurie supposedly is mad at RC because of Finch. Lame Rawlins is the one that fired Larry. RC was just the hatchet man. But it's not like Laurie was that active BEFORE Finch was fired so some of that stuff don't fly.

Rose is young. Eventually all that will blow over. I'm sure Penny will reach out to him.

Cincy is a weird deal. The city itself should be fairly captive for the Bearcats because they don't have a pro basketball or hockey team. The problem is that they are smack in the middle of Buckeye, Hoosier and Wildcat territory. They have a large tv market and have done very well on the field, but to only draw 29,000 for games in a 35,000 seat stadium is criminal.

Right now they have an advantage according to on field performance and geography. Tv market is debatable, but they do have 800,000 more people within their MSA. I would be interested to see what their tv numbers are.

But there is something that can change things about ACC's affinity for academics.

If the athletic powerhouses of the ACC left, and the ACC is very desperate, Memphis could get in if our football and basketball programs were consistently kick ass.

Are FSU academics top notch?

No, and neither are Cincy's nor Louisville's, though both have med schools and fairly large endowments. So does Ole Miss.

Louisville until 20 or so years ago was not even a public state university. It was a public "city" university, funded primarily locally, sort of a city college Louisville.

For undergrads, both have admissions policies that, like Memphis, are just a notch above open admissions.

No doubt, they are good schools, but like Memphis, far from elite academically.

Isn't Mississippi's med school in Jackson?

Is it not considered a separate school like UT-Memphis is part of the UT system but separate from UTK?

Yes, it's in Jackson and is part of the University of Mississippi system.

Just like UT-Knoxville and UT-Memphis are considered part of the University of Tennessee system.

And both systems are considered to have medical schools. The Memphis "system" doesn't.

For that matter--you can argue that UC Berkeley doesn't have a med school. The med school is UC-San Francisco. Same with University of Maryland. The med school is in Baltimore, not College Park.

That's not an unusual arrangement at all for state universities.

If Maryland gets out of the 52 Mil it is supposed to pay the ACC for exiting then the ACC will become another Big East. The gloves will be off and the next round of craziness will begin.

I know its be said that Texas does not want Memphis but if at all possible we need to make a big push for the Big 12. The raiding of the ACC that is coming will determine alot. But if we have any friends in the Big 12 we need to get their help.

Was Laurie giving money to the University of Memphis when Finch was head coach?

Was Laurie giving money to Finch when he was having his health issues?

That's the 64 thousand dollar question. And don't get me started on the money raised for Larry during his illness. From what I've heard a bunch of that was blown.

That's not an unusual arrangement at all for state universities.

One of the reasons Nebraska was removed from the American Association of University was because their medical school wasn't on campus.

I think it's one of the issues that would keep UTK from becoming an AAU school.

Cal and Maryland are both AAU schools. But Berkeley is 13 miles from San Francisco and College Park is 30 miles from Baltimore.

But alas, Lincoln is 50 miles from Omaha.

I don't believe the Big XII is ever going to be a realistic option for Memphis. Most likely, our only chance to move up a conference would be the ACC and that would only happen if that conference lost 4 to 6 members to other leagues. Even then it would be a longshot.

Back before TCU was begging to get into CUSA, would you have ever guessed they would get into the Big XII?

That was a long, long time ago and many 10+ win seasons in football have come and gone for TCU since then. Plus, TCU shares a common history with those schools.

A gutted out ACC that still includes Louise and Cindy is a natural home for Memphis.

So JMS... By some miracle, we become what Boise State is... We dominate the new Big East which includes UConn and Cincy. We go to the 4 team playoff a time or two. We also play in two or three BcS equivalent bowls.

So in ten years, you don't think the Big XII would consider us?

Sure, but how likely is that to happen? I am talking about what is most likely to occur. Most likely is that we remain in the Big East long term. Next would be we join a gutted out ACC at some point down the road. After that would be the Big XII. After that, the world ends.

Yep. It's all up to them. And really it is the Big Ten more than the $EC. The $EC seems pretty content to sit at 14. With the Big Ten, you never know what will happen next. There are even rumors out there that they may not stop at 16, but go to 18, 20 or even 24.
