RE: Basketball schedules after next season
We get 30 games.
I'd like to see the following:
18 Conference Games - 9 Home / 9 Away
3 In Season Tournament Games - 3 Neutral
4 Non-Conference "Name Games" - 2 Home / 2 Away
5 Non-Conference "Buy Games" - 5 Home

The 4 Non-Conference "Name Games" should be Louisville, UT, Texas & a New C-7 team.
The 5 "Buy Games" should be Southern Miss, UAB, Belmont, & 2 others expected to finis in the top 150 RPI.

That is 16 Home, 11 Away, 3 Neutral.

When we play a 3-game in season tourney at a neutral site, we actually get 31 games. Check prior recent seasons. We only have 30 games this year b/c we had an early game cancelled and couldn't find a replacement. Also, JMS is right that we try to schedule 18 home games to keep revenues up.

I believe either 17 or 18 home games are required in our agreement with the Grizzlies to play at the Forum

We have 31 this season. The limit without an early season tournament is 27 games. Most early season tournaments used to be 3 games, so that would get you up to 30. Now, most have gone to 4 games, so teams can play up to 31.

I think that is right.

Right. The missing game was an exhibition. And we did play 4 in the Atlantis tourney. Three there and one at home against Samford to get to 31.

What is the rule on these tourneys? Can you play every year if invited or is there some sort of max rule?

Used to be a rule limiting them, but that was discarded. Now a program can participate in an early season tournament every year if they get an invite.

we have to have 18 home games until football starts to be less of a financial loss.

RE: Basketball schedules after next season
31 games each year.

18 for conference; 9 H and 9 A.

13 left to schedule.

Plenty of preseason BB tourneys - Cancun, Alaska, Puerto Rico, Las Vegas, Orlando, NIT, 2 in Hawaii. Each of those require at least 8 teams. MEMPHIS would not have a problem participating in one each year. So the preseason tourney takes 3 games. 10 left.

Of those 10, MEMPHIS must have 8 or 9 of them at home to insure a 17 or 18 home game schedule each season. So at most each year, MEMPHIS can go play two OOC road games. Obviously those should be the "power conference" H&H deals.

We know the following are true regarding future OOC BB series:
1) The 4 game Mississippi BB series starts in fall 2014 down in Oxford to open their new BB arena.
2) There are preliminary discussions with Tennessee about a future H&H BB series.
3) There are still 2 games remaining in the recently postponed Gonzaga series.

The truth is there are not many opportunities to schedule OOC games against power conference opposition....maybe 2 max a year. But MEMPHIS is definitely committed to Mississppi for 2014-2017, and Tennessee could be on the horizon.

My suggestion for the power conf games is to not seek Duke, Mich State, Kansas, etc. MEMPHIS might draw them in the pre-season tournaments. Focus instead on teams like Kansas State, Florida State, Oklahoma State, Georgetown, NC State, etc. Schedule those carefully so there is a balance each year of road and home games.

If a H&H series against a traditional old rival like Louisville falls into the TIGERS lap...sign it!

The buy games should as usual be teams that are not RPI killers that will take a $25k - $50k payday to come to the FEF without a return game.

I think we should absolutely load up in non conference no matter how hard our conference schedule is. The way the trend is going, the harder your SOS is, the better you are in the eyes of the committee, no matter how good or bad you do. It's sad, but that's the way it's going.

FWIW, that is very much my long standing preference as well; both for football and basketball.

I recognize other dynamics are at play with our scheduling, but I sure wish we could overcome them and escape once and for all from the mid major perception.

IMHO, a MUCH stronger schedule benefits the team in the long term; and is preferred by fans, players, recruits, and even students.

would like to see the fef forum language about home games. I would imagine exhibitions count. Tickets still cost money to the exhibitions and are included in your season ticket package. Also, is it 17 every year? or an average of 17 every year?

How about some primary sources before we just say it can't be done

I have no idea, but I just wonder how much more FEF makes when we actually fill the house for a quality opponent as compared to the so called "announced" crowd against all the contractual cream puffs?

And, was there some kind of clause about minimum annual attendance at one point in time?

With the Ole Miss games contracted, and the available slots so limited, I just don't see how you can make a real case for giving UT one of those slots. When they were having more success, yes, but now? That is a poor use of our available schedule.

The new AD doesn't seem to agree with you.

That's nothing new. The old one never did either. :)

I don't even think it is four. Maybe three. We will be playing 18 conference games in the Big East. And of those three, UTK and Mississippi will be two of them. Louise will probably be the third. That's it.

This...I don't think folks understand how restricted we are with our FEF contract.
