Again these things are cyclical. However, the depth of dip can be managed some.

This is primarily mental with the exception of DB and Darius. Hawk needs to pace David regardless of how DB feels or what Hawk wants. Darius is more of a medical concern.

The difference is execution. That is a result of being crisp/confident which is a result of being fresh/not fatigued.

There is plenty of talent. Two players are irreplaceable: Whittington and Paul. There are "no" replacements to adequately make a difference.

The tact at hand is to use the talent you have that either isnt playing or playing well. Those not playing seeing minutes is easier. Those struggling a wrinkle to consider is to play them differently. Something new or fresh.
Not a paradigm shift, just a wrinkle.

IMO, Perry needs not only to play 15-20 minutes minimum but be told to "finish". He has a very good mid-range game. We don't need to go feast or famine behind the arc or in the paint. A three-legged stool provides more balance.

Avery, needs to get 10 minutes minimum. And with Darius needing medical attention (rest or worse) AJ needs to be out on the floor "cutting his teeth". Sitting isnt learning. His length, speed and mid range game should be a factor moving forward.

Klien. I have watched a couple games where "he has sat". I saw nothing to merit it. Nothing. He's a freshman playing the most demanding position on the floor. Live with his mistakes and build his confidence.
You have two choices: The JK that went up against Ohio or the one you see now. Which do you want?

Playing AR alongside with JK will spell DB.

Go long and play Perry at the 2G with Tava the wing and AJ the 4 to go with Whit. Again, maximizing skill and athleticism and spelling DB.

I will add, for this team, that shortening your bench including in the tournament will shorten your season.

Take advanatage of the depth, go with the hot hand and press the advantage until the other team wilts.

Amen.

It is hard to limit DB's minutes, but in his case less is more, and riding your horse into the ground will not pay off.

I think we had some success and the approach and mindset changed from development to win right now.

Time to back off a bit. Just like golf. Relax, take the easy swing, and all the sudden you find the sweet spot.

+1 all of it

I really don't think Hawk is managing the minutes very well down the stretch.

3-3 against the MAC East. Once again we find ourselves as just a middle of the pack MAC East team.

I was seriously thinking of going to the MAC tournament next month. But after the last two games realize it will just be same-o same-o. Hawk will most likely lead the boys to an early exit, as usual.

Yeah, you should only go if you think we have a good chance of winning it all. Don't go to support the players and also enjoy some entertaining basketball and excitement of MAC basketball.
Before every season, we should all try to figure out what games we are going to win and only attend those ones.

That would be those OOC gimmies that Hawk schedules along with the 5-6 automatics from the MAC West games.

I think its time for another Hawk talk session in Grand Rapids... after his last one he tore off 7 straight wins... Come on back Hawk and i'll ask you again what it is that makes these players shoot the ball so poorly once they pull on a WMU jersey...

No. It is just too disappointing to spend the time and money only to watch the coach and team lay an egg each and every year (since the first championship season). If I thought we had a chance I would be there and give my support.

After banging your head against the wall so many times you stop just because it hurts too much.

I’ll still catch the home games and be there to root for them. But I'll follow the tournament from home.

RE: Swoon II
Decisions Decisions. Not as simple a task as one thinks.

PT can be based on a host of things. Some not static like stats on paper.

But melding it all together a couple rules of thumb.
- Always build looking toward the tournament.
- Learning is not accomplished primarily by seeing from the sideline. That is what practice is for. Watch tape, discuss, walk through, play. Pull junior aside so he then can also see it at game speed then reinsert with the expectation and encouragement it takes to get them to the desired level. Game time: Play your players.
-Don't worry about the psyche of your upper classman. If they are indeed upperclassman then they understand that winning will pull all folk through. Sitting them or reducing their role should not dampen their spirit. It should be a burr under their saddle. Youngins, havent quite figured out game speed let alone where their head should be. They need opportunity and encouragement. That means into the fire and a longer leash with verbal encouragement.
Come tournament time, everybody should be set. The tournament will be a blur. With everyone on board and prepared no one will complain about any given moment because the next one is already upon them. It's called being on a roll. But this doesnt just happen. You have to have them prepared ahead of time, as stated above.

Again: Klien, Perry, Avery and Tava must get significant minutes. They are every bit as good as Poke and Dan. With Darius limping and DB needing to dial it back some the opportunity is there. As previously posted I would play JK and AR together. Build up JK and keep AR in a comfort zone.

Come tournament time if you need a "jolt", stand in the gap, stop a run you're not throwing kids in over their head. Their willing and ready.

If this plan is followed I assure you Hawk will be pleasantly surprised.

His MO of keeping it the same, doing the Bronco thing and shortening the bench are as predictable as Dambrodt, mixing it up (6'9" lefty on Kool, fronting and backing Joe and ignoring others).

Hawk is o fer going that route. Time to refreshen the thinking and doing.

Now, now. I would probably only take the time off and make hotel accommodations if I thought there was a better chance of watching our team play multiple days too.

RE: Swoon II
The formula for Big Dance tournament success is right in our backyard. Tom Izzo is, to me, the master at preparing his teams for tournament success.
During the regular season, he uses master psychology designed strictly for end of season runs, final fours, et al. I personally believe he is a basketball genius when it comes to prepping his young charges, every bit as good as John Wooden. The man knows what it takes to stand out on the biggest stage in college ball, and gets it from his team, year in and year out. I love watching his teams in the big dance. I wish we had a little of that just for the MAC tourney. We seem to be the masters of one and done, or two and blue. GBL is right though, a coach starts at the beginning of the season with eyes only on the prize at the end of the season.
