In person, UofMemphis is that nicest guy you would ever want to meet. It's funny how things get all twisted around on a message board.

I remember going to Mississippi Southern vs. Memphis State games in Jackson, including the year we played 2 times (1964 I think it was just off the top of my head) and many other times. I hate to see the long string of games broken between our schools, and while Memphis does seem to be getting better, I admit I look forward to the battles with MTSU because I think we might have more interesting games than we normally had with Memphis. I have seen Memphis improve before only to go back to the lesser level, but MTSU seems to have more of the constant winning attitude. I will certainly hate seeing Memphis go in basketball since finally USM seems poised to give them a fight, but USM is a football school not a basketball school. I am excited about playing MTSU and regret not playing Memphis, but Memphis made their choice and I respect it, but I also am respectful of what MTSU brings. Good luck to Memphis and hopefully one day we can meet again in a big bowl game.

Yes, it was 1964.

In the early 60's USM and Memphis ruled southern independent football with Pie Vann and Spook Murphy. USM has been successful in maintaining that level. We've got work to do....acknowledged.

Frankly, we'll all see how long MTSU can maintain a relatively high level of play. That's yet to be seen.

I've always respected USM, their athletic program, and fans.....high quality school, high quality program, high quality fans.

I don't have any ill feelings towards any of the CUSA schools, but I do get a little riled up when my school gets pulled into the flaming.

CUSA has been great to everyone in it and everyone that has left it. USM is actually in a good spot in CUSA with close travel partners (on a limited budget). They or La Tech will dominate the league most years. Thats assuming Tulsa leaves bc we all know who the Alpha Dog is in this conference. ; )

I remember people talking smack on UCF (who was God awful its last year in the MAC) and ended up going to the CUSA championship year one.

I think some of the ECU posters should take it down a notch.

To be brutally honest about it, I will say that most all teams are better off that have been in C-USA currently or in the past. The biggest exceptions are Army (They certainly didn't gain), and this will surprise some, Southern Miss. The reason I say USM is because USM was at the point in the 80s where we were the ones the big boys didn't want to play in football. We were known as the giant killers and often did knock off bigger schools, and even got to the point where Miss. State and Ole Miss found themselves being the one pulling an upset over USM than the other way around. This is what was USM football when C-USA formed and Houston was the lower level, casted to the side school of the SWC who had only taken in Houston because of need. Houston in 95 was not too respected. Louisville was basketball with a joke of a football program but with enough of a market and should it get the right monies could be respected. Tulane of course was just Tulane with the big appeal being it was in New Orleans and had at one time been a big football program, but that had already been so long that few were around who remembered it. Memphis was a program that might pull an upset and could once in awhile put a solid team on the field, but normally wasn't impressive. South Florida was new and the only thing they had was money people and a market but no history whatsoever. UAB like USF was new and had the big problem of fighting for attention with Alabama and not as strong but still strong Auburn. UAB played some tough football but it was obvious they would be in for a tough long fight for respect. So as you see USM was team to make your name against in the conference. It helped the other teams more than USM but it gave USM something they needed in scheduling. ECU was a team we worked to get in and we never regret it because they have been great and have been a wonderful rival to USM. So USM has been served by C-USA but most are better off due to the conference than USM. Really, based on the actual teams during the last 17 seasons, do you think Memphis, Tulane, or ECU would be more attractive in football (remember it is football that all this is about) than USM? No of course not but someone decided it was about TV and we can buy a program and pay for status (South Florida), or an attractive location (Tulane), or a good basketball program with a good size market (Memphis) and we could buy our way to a higher status. Well, maybe it will work, and maybe not, but one thing I can say is at Southern Miss we will still play good football, and we will play the big boys with a good shot at winning and if these programs run up against USM in the future, they will likely find the same proud and tough program they had a tough time with before.

You're right, there isn't a strong comparison there. But Memphis basketball has accomplished much more than USM football, or any other CUSA football program. Memphis basketball has been the bell-cow for CUSA since 2005 and that's a fact.

USM basketball went to 1 NCAA...Memphis football went to 5 bowls in six years.

baseball isn't a revenue producing sport...football and basketball are...i've never seen a school with a 50 million dollar budget and a program built on baseball, women's basketball, soccer, swimming, etc...football and mens basketball are where the money's at.

You are comparing a team making the NCAA's to a football team going 6-6 and being able to go to a bowl game? Sure, whatever you say.

You're right, there isn't a strong comparison there. But Memphis basketball has accomplished much more than USM football, or any other CUSA football program. Memphis basketball has been the bell-cow for CUSA since 2005 and that's a fact.

Not arguing the strength of the Memphis basketball program. Once again, I took no shot at Memphis basketball like the Memphis poster took at USM football. That said, USM football has never had any postseason games wiped clean for cheating. That I am very proud of.
