Big Attendance Problems.
Between EMU and NIU, they have over 17,000+ seats in there convocation centers. They had a combined 1230 people in attendance. EMU--522, NIU--708... I'll tip my hat to any coach that can recruit quality kids with a empty stadium as your backdrop....
For a guy who thought 10 wins this year would be on the high side, I gotta say that these young men are FUN to watch...Great win last night.

RE: Big Attendance Problems.
I might as well RE-start the discussion regarding parking at Read. If WMU has any expectation of exceeding 3000 on a week night there needs to be a plan to make parking more convenient.
Last night an hour before the game the donor lot appeared to be over half full of student cars. I have basketball fan friends that WILL NOT attend WMU games because of fieldhouse parking issues. I fully understand that students need parking also.

Has anyone here on csnbbs ever taken the shuttle from the Lawson lot?

Students pay $300 to be able to park there too. There does need to be something done about parking though.

I honestly don't think parking is all that bad at UA. Get there 30 min early and you are in the clear. Easy in, easy out. I park at the softball fields.

I've always had good luck at the ramp across from Read. Park on one of the top levels and you can use the exit on the fourth level across from Ellsworth and get out real quick.

I always use the stadium lot and ride the bus in. On nice days we walk back for the exercise. Bus is always prompt and most often the drivers are courteous. Works very well for us.

Wednesday the company was using a tour bus (versus normal campus bus) and driver even had Robin’s post game shop piped through the bus.

Just park in the parking garage. There is plenty of space.

That would go over like a turd in a punch bowl with the students.

I'd only say for mid-week contests. One day every two weeks wouldn't really be that big of a deal. If they knew it was a regular practice, i'm sure they really wouldn't care that much. Say the Rec closed at 7 every other wednesday... students would get used to it.

LOL, wouldn't it be great if the kept the rec doors unlocked, but when people got to the turnstiles, they just funneled people across to UA!

RE: Big Attendance Problems.
Having lived in Zimmerman and Davis Halls students do mind having the lots closed for football Saturdays and do mind not being able to find spots in 'their' lots during basketball game nights. I've long thought that building an upper deck over the lower of the two lots next to UA and Zimmerman, with access from the upper lot would solve many problems.

This. I lived in French. One of the jobs I worked involved me bringing heavy heavy equipment home that I didn't want to leave in my car. There were few things that pissed me off more than coming home from work to find no spots on a basketball night, having to park half a mile away and having to carry all that stuff. We paid $300 to park there. Event or not, spectators didn't- and if they did, WMU special donor parking for you (which I've never seen close to full FWIW).

I think a parking structure would solve a lot of the problems. Work on building it during the summer for the least disruption possible and maybe double or even triple the amount of spaces available with a couple levels.

RE: Big Attendance Problems.
I never had a problem with parking for basketball games as a student or an alumni. I always just arrived 15 minutes early, parked in the softball lot and walked across Stadium Drive. It's about 5-10 blocks closer than attending a Tigers/Lions game (heck, even a Pistons game) in Detroit.

However, I've had some issues from a media standpoint -- by no fault of the athletic department though. Would be nice if Parking Services could work something out with the Athletic Department for media attempting to cover practices, events, etc. during normal WMU ticketing hours. Kind of stinks having to buy a day pass ($5) or feed the visitor meters full of quarters each time. I would love to have the option to buy a "press pass" or something along those lines that was for the whole season. Same for football and hockey season. But I digress...

edit: For clarification, media receives season passes for all home games. I was referring to practices, interviews, events, etc.

RE: Big Attendance Problems.
I'm just bummed they put an end to parking on the sidewalks on the West end of UA. That was my trump card until the Akron game last year. I'll never forget having to walk out of that game in the first half, having to move my car because they announced a tow truck would be summoned, and missing a solid 5-6 minutes of the game. I believe we were ahead when I walked out, and when I returned we were down. Total stomach punch when you factor in that we lost in OT and I got a ticket from parking services. Total garbage...

Yeah, I dont think parking at the UA is really much of an issue. If you are early enough you can generally get a spot across from the Athletic Center. If not, there is always plenty of space in the garage and you can walk through the Athletic Center directly to the UA so the weather isnt an issue either. I would agree with parking issues regarding football, but for hoops I dont think its the cause of lack of attendance.

As for closing the Rec Center........ well, what? That isnt going to get anymore people to the game.

Yup, agree 100%.

Lived in Zimmerman for a year and it was a royal pain at times. I get that there are two very different groups (students + fans) that need to be satisfied and both are paying to park there. Adding a level seems like a perfectly logical choice.

Honestly, with how sloped it is there, you could probably recess the whole damn thing far enough that it wouldn't even stick out above ground on the high end.
